Frente à entrada da barra da ribeira de Bensafrim, assegurava a defesa do antigo porto. Construção do séc. XVII, com fosso, ponte levadiça e imponente porta de armas. No interior, pequena capela com azulejos do séc. XVII. Excelente miradouro para observar a cidade. A outra fortificação que defendia Lagos - o Forte do Pinhão - foi destruída pelo terramoto de 1755 e parte da falésia onde assentava separou-se da costa, sendo ainda visíveis pedras da muralha. No local da bateria que a substituiu foi construída, recentemente, uma residência particular.

This maritime fort is at the mouth of the river, defending the harbour and former anchorage from pirates attacks. It dates to the end of the 17th century and is one of a line of forts, redoubts and batteries erected in the wake of the Portuguese Restoration War, which raged for almost 30 years between Portugal and Spain. This building is from a time of sophisticated artillery, so has a low profile and not much decoration. But to enter you have to cross a drawbridge, and there’s an endearing chapel inside with period tiles. The roof has bartizans at each corner, and there are views of the rocky coast to the south and Meia Praia on the other side of the river.
