Malta has been a seafaring nation since time immemorial, having been at the forefront of shipbuilding, ship repair and trading for millennia. The Malta Maritime Museum brings together some of this rich history in the former Royal Naval Bakery, a unique building in itself and one of the most distinct to the Birgu skyline. Built in the 1840s as the main bakery for the British Mediterranean fleet it today houses a collection of over 20,000 artefacts. The aim of the museum is to illustrate Malta's maritime history, from prehistory to the present, within both a Mediterranean and global context.
