In the Megali Vryssi square in village Krasi, province Pediada, near Malia, there are three plane trees, the trademarks of the village. The most important of them is the great platan in the center of the square, which is considered to be the oldest and most majestic of the plane trees in Crete and one of the oldest in Greece. The perimeter of the trunk is about 24 meters and its age is estimated at 2400 years, as it is said that each meter of the perimeter represents 100 years of growth. It is bulky, has huge branches and dense foliage covering the entire square. Next to the tree there are two springs that have crystal clear water throughout the year. The plane tree over its long history has witnessed countless events. It was the center of the social and intellectual life of the area. It is known that Nikos Kazantzakis, the most famous Greek writer, spent several summers of the decade 1910-1920 with his friends in Krasi, the birthplace of his wife Galatia Alexiou.

If you have a car, you should drive 15' north of Malia, to the traditional village Krasi. The route crosses a wild gorge with many carob and oak trees. Krasi is famous for the huge plane tree in the central square, where 10 people in line cannot hug its trunk. You can drink your coffee in the square, eat in the taverns of the village and walk in the narrow streets. Lastly, near the square is a spring with clean cold water.

Krasi is a traditional, mountainous village at an altitude of 600 m. The visitor, climbing the uphill and full of bends towards Kresi, has the chance to admire the panoramic view of the northern coastline of the Hersonissos. Krasi is a rural settlement with the main occupation of the inhabitants of olive cultivation and livestock farming. Arriving in the square of the village, the 3 large plantains and the Vrises will dominate the landscape. Among them stands the biggest, 2400-year-old perennial plantain next to "Megali Vrisi", which consists of two springs running clean water all year round. A walk in the picturesque narrow streets of the village where there are stone-built houses of Cretan architecture and well-preserved historic churches reaches for the visitor to feel the warmth and hospitality of the local residents. In Krasi there are several cafes and traditional taverns that are famous for their traditional cooked in wood ovens. The settlement of Krasi belongs to a protected NATURA 2000 natural area, which needs total protection and management, while the monumental plane tree was declared presidential decree 29/8/2011 as a preserved monument of nature.
