It was originally a grist mill that used water from the west branch of the Little Conestoga Creek to power a wheel used to grind flour. The kitchen is slightly stocked (pots, dishes, drip coffee maker, small refrig and an antique stove, but no working oven). A gas fireplace adds a cozy feature to the living space.

The mansion was home to the first treasurer of the US, General Edward Hand’s daughter, and President Buchanan’s fiance.
