Shiga: ryokans

Absolutely charming place - the location is great for seeing the historical district and most of the sites. The only caveat is that if you are traveling with somebody who is a bit older or less mobile this might not be the listing for you - the stairs are incredibly steep, and the bathroom tub is much deeper than it appears in photo (which was very fun to take a bath in). However, it’s a bit tricky to step out of if you’re a bit older from the shower. Overall 10/10 completely recommend as long as you’re comfortable with climbing out of the bathtub/shower.

Excelente localização. Casa muito bonita e tradicional, com excelentes comodidades e detalhes de requinte. O dono foi sempre muito atencioso e cooperante em tudo. Adoramos!!!

Η κυρία Atsuko και η αδερφη της ηταν καταπληκτικες. Μας βοηθησαν με οτι χρειαστηκαμε. Μας εδωσαν οδηγιες για πολλα αξιοθεατα, μετακινησεις και εστιατορια και περασαμε καταπληκτικα στο ομορφο σπιτι τους. Εμεινα σε πολλα σπιτια στην Ιαπωνια αλλα στο σπιτι της κυριας Atsuko καναμε τον καλυτερο υπνο στα ταταμι και νιωσαμε οτι ξεκουραστηκαμε ακομα και με λιγες ωρες υπνου. Σας ευχαριστουμε για ολα, στο επανιδείν!

Was a great experience staying in a traditional guesthouse. The hosts were lovely, cafe was great, and our room was clean, tidy and full of character. Shared facilities (kitchen, toilets, showers) were all very basic and old but were clean enough and did the job. Definitely worth the compromise to experience staying a few nights in a traditional Japanese room! We arrived 15 mins early and were told we had to wait to check-in. Not a major issue as we just sat in the cafe and had a coffee but seemed a little unnecessary as the room was clearly ready (and we were clearly exhausted!) Thanks Team Gojo!

Heerlijk tiny house met alle faciliteiten aanwezig. En in de bruisende omgeving Gion. Wij hebben genoten!

Chieri was such a welcoming and friendly host :) We were happy we got to experience a traditional Japanese house. We had a walk with Chieri and Wabi around the house and the river bank is very pretty. There are a few stores around where you can buy organic food and groceries. The house was beautiful and had authentic features. Chieri and her mother Kaori also made us probably the most beautiful (and tasty!) Japanese breakfast. The stay was a memorable experience for us both and we would happily come back on our next visit to Japan!

The flat was really cozy, with a perfect traditional Japanese style and great for an immersive experience! The bathroom with a tub was beautiful. We loved the tatami flooring, and the Japanese furniture and decor added a lovely touch. The location was peaceful but very close to the city center, with shops and restaurants nearby. We really enjoyed our stay!

Chieri en haar moeder en hun schattige hond zijn hele lieve hosts die er alles aan doen om je verblijf een echte authentieke Japanse ervaring te laten zijn. Hun huis is prachtig ingericht, ruim en voelt heel fijn en gastvrij. Het café en de biertuin van Chieri zijn ook zeker de moeite waard om te bezoeken. Het eten en drinken en het gratis Japanse ontbijt waren heerlijk. En als je nog authentieke Japanse souvenirs zoekt zijn die hier ook te vinden. Al met al een perfecte plek om even tot rust te komen na het bezoeken van de drukke steden als Kyoto en Osaka.

Very beautiful house

We had a great stay at Unknown Kyoto. It was in a great location for all of our planned activities. The staff was very friendly and our room was just what we needed.

My favorite stay in Japan so far. Real traditional sleeping in a gorgeous guesthouse. The communal areas are very cozy, and surrounding area is very walkable! Absolutely recommend!

We loved our stay at Guess House Anex. It’s a beautifully preserved traditional Japanese wooden house full of charm. We slept on futons over tatami mats in a lovely, peaceful room with wooden panels and sliding doors — a truly cozy and authentic experience. The house has three floors: the ground floor has showers and toilets, the first floor has a small common area to relax, and the rooms are on the top floor. Everything was very well cared for. The location is excellent — just a short walk from the pagoda and in a quiet, authentic Kyoto neighborhood, perfect for exploring the city on foot. Check-in is done at Gojo Café, about five minutes away on foot, and the process was very easy. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. A very special and authentic stay. I’d definitely come back in the future

Our group was so excited for this stay given its history and cultural touches. We were not disappointed! The home is absolutely beautiful and thoughtfully curated. Our host was also very helpful in coordinating luggage delivery for a few of our traveling party. The neighborhood was peaceful and full of local spots to explore, as well as well connected to all the must dos in Kyoto via public transport.

这次和好友一起去关西玩，在小黛家住了三个晚上，真的很棒，典雅的日式榻榻米别墅，内部装饰的也很漂亮，住在里面非常有代入感，别墅位处京都富人区，环境非常好，虽然不在市中心但配套设施很好，地铁和便利店都是极短的步行范围内。然后，小黛姐人真的超级好！很热心，入住之前不厌其烦的在微信上回答我各种问题，到京都当天更是开车来山科站接我们，然后给我们详细的介绍京都应该怎么玩，怎么坐车，还让我们碰到问题随时微信上联系她，最后一晚还拿出珍藏的红酒招待我们，给我的感觉不是房东，而是多年的好朋友在日本招待我。

Thankyou Hiroko and Tetsuya for welcoming us into your beautiful home. We are a family of 4 adults and all loved being in a traditional private home, with such a beautiful garden and an interesting history. We had a wonderful private dinner, prepared by Chef Hiroko which was one of our favourite meals that we’ve had in Japan. Thankyou so much Hiroko. Tetsuya gave us great tips to walk from our accomodation to the Philosophers path which was stunning, esp in spring with the cherry blossom still blooming. We loved our stay here.
