Food Scene

The afterglow of celebrity still burns brightly at Chiltern Firehouse, the first property outside America for hotelier André Balazs of Chateau Marmont and The Mercer fame. Take a seat at the marble-topped bar for crab doughnuts, bacon cornbread and Krug by the glass ahead of food from chef Nuno Mendes’s open kitchen, including an incendiary mac and cheese with jalapeño that might make you wish there were still firefighters on the premises. Eggy breakfasts and weekend brunches are further attractions, as too year-round courtyard dining which offers the best people-watching opportunities for who’s coming and going.

Former Nobu chef Masaki Sugisaki now has outposts of Dinings in the well-heeled honeypots of Chelsea and Tel Aviv but this cramped Marylebone townhouse is where he established himself as one of London’s most inventive Japanese chefs. Fish from Cornish dayboats is crafted into finely wrought sushi and sashimi at a ground-floor counter, potato tacos might be filled with lobster with jalapeño mayonnaise, while hot stuff includes Wagyu steak with wasabi salsa. Book well ahead: the tiny dimensions mean this is not somewhere to drop into on the off-chance.

Ravinder Bhogal was born in Nairobi but has spent most of her life in London – the sort of cross-cultural melting-pot that makes for fascinating eating when a chef is inspired by her upbringing. So at Jikoni, you’ll find lamb and harissa sausage rolls, three riffs on a Scotch egg (order the prawn toast version for preference) and, best of all, a mutton keema sloppy Joe that eats like a deconstructed burger lashed by pickled onion, padrón peppers and mint and mango chutney. Much like the cooking, the colourful decor gives the impression of having been being artfully thrown together with whatever caught Bhogal’s fancy.
