Sightseeing

The most visited town in France per head of population, Sarlat baffles visitors with its outstanding beauty. The centre of the town contains multiple winding lanes laced with beautiful touristy shops and local galleries. Sarlat boasts a wide range of eateries; remember to take a walk out of the main squares for quality food and better value for money. The summer season sees a range of outdoor events, live music and open-air plays. There is also an unmissable weekly market, get there early to find a parking space. The drive to Sarlat itself is spectacular. The road hugs the river Dordogne and passes through several untouched villages including Saint Julien-de-Lampon (recommended for a coffee stop) just outside of which there is a campsite where visitors line the river to swim and relax in the sun.

Home of Heineken Cup rugby team and the region’s local airport, Brive is the “hippest” of local cities. Centred around a medieval cathedral around which a recent archaeological dig returned some fascinating finds, each road boasts many fashionable shops and cafés. For something a bit different from “traditional” France, Brive is the answer. Take care though, Brive shuts down on Sundays. Brive is just a 15-minute drive via the A20 toll road.

Quercyland is the regions only waterpark. From the top of the slides, see for miles down the neighbouring river. Also in the park are multiple bouncy castles, an astro turf 5 a side pitch, go karting and a pizzeria café. A great way to spend the day, every day! Owned by the same company as the waterpark, the canoeing is a highly recommended day out. Go to the canoeing cabin and the guys there take you on a bus 9km up the river where you will enter the river at Chateau de la Treyne and descend down at your leisure. If you are feeling courageous, take the 18km option. We advise you to take a picnic and stop at one of the wildest parts of the river. There is much to see on the trip, from the wildlife to the gorgeous chateau that “Brangelina” offered a blank cheque for. Free entry to the waterpark afterwards! Bike Hire is also available.

Food scene

The Grand Hotel is very much the focal point of the main street of Souillac. Eat here for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. The large terrace is perfect for the big groups the domaine attracts. The food is great and the “plat du jour” means that there is something new to try every day. A great way to start any night before a near by open air concert.

Situated at the foot of the bell tower under a shaded ivy terrace, hide from the sun and enjoy great French food. Unwind afterwards in the neighbouring square, which often hosts live music.
