The symbol of Dubrovniks survival and freedom, the fort was used for the defence of the city and the western Pile gate. Above the entrance to the fort is the famed inscription: NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO (Freedom is not sold for all gold in the world). The first official records mention the fort in 1301, although it is believed that its construction began earlier. Today Lovrjenac is well-known as one of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival open-air venues particularly suitable for works by William Shakespeare.

The Baroque church dedicated to the Dubrovnik patron Saint Blaise was constructed according to the design of the Venetian master Marino Gropelli in 1715, on the site of the previous church in the Romanesque style dedicated to the same saint. Saint Blaise (St. Vlaho cro.), identified by medieval Slavs with the pagan god Veles, is the patron saint of the city of Dubrovnik and formerly the protector of the independent Republic of Ragusa.

In great danger of contracting the plague, the people of Dubrovnik built lazarettos which served as isolation hospitals. Visitors from pestiferous and suspicious areas, according to a Liber Viridis regulation from 1377, had to spend 40 days in special places. The history of the Dubrovnik lazarettos reflects the entire history of the protection against plague in the Dubrovnik Republic. The last constructed lazaretto is the one located at the eastern entrance to the city called Ploče. The construction of the lazaretto, comprising 5 buildings, was completed in 1642. The lazaretto has been excellently preserved and some of its buildings are nowadays venues for various art and craft workshops.

Mount Srđ offers a magnificent view of Dubrovnik and its surroundings. On a clear day, you can see up to 60 km (37 miles). The Dubrovnik cable, built in 1969, makes easy to come here. You can also get there on foot (see chapter Hiking & Walking). The monumental Fort Imperial was built at this strategic location during Napoleon's occupation in 1810. From the fort, the French controlled the sea and the hinterland of Dubrovnik. The Imperial Fort, as the first line of defense, played a major role during the Croatian War of Independence.

Guide des Quartiers

The residents of old Dubrovnik entered the city through two main gates, the eastern gate at Ploče and the western one at Pile. The draw bridges were pulled up at night to prevent passage to uninvited visitors. Entering the Pile gate, where one can see costumed city guards in summer, you come to the principal street called Placa or Stradun. The main open-air public space of Dubrovnik, the favourite promenade and meeting place, the venue of all great festivities and processions, Stradun is the main shopping area and the widest and most beautiful street which divides the Old City into its northern and southern part. Its origins go back to the 11th century, when the people filled up the shallow sea channel which separated the one time Islet of Lave and a settlement on it from the land where another settlement existed

A wonderful place to enjoy swimming and diving in the transparent turquoise water under the pine trees. Plan a whole day for a trip to the island-nature park, you will not be disappointed. The boat departs from the port of Dubrovnik and after few minutes you are in this paradise. Here you can swim, explore the island and take a picture on the throne from Games of throne. The only thing you must not do is stay overnight on the island. They say the island is haunted. This strange story is created by the centuries of rich history, legends, tales and the magic of the sea and nature.

Magic at sunset! This is just the right spot to have a drink, and jump into the water when it gets too hot. The only problem: You have to find the bar, first! What looks like a bar is actually an opening in the ramparts, which are clinging to the rocks at this level of the old town. To get there, from the Stradun, go down south via the Od Marguerita alley, follow the “cold drink” sign and after passing the Jesuit church, turn left. At the entrance to the Buža, you have to take the steps to enter the fortification wall through the hole (buža in the Dubrovnik dialect). It is the larger of the two bars of the same name, it is also the more expensive.
