Informazioni sulla città/località

The historical centre of Lucca is a small jewel that is perhaps still little known. Enclosed by its perfectly preserved 16th-century walls, it offers palaces, churches, squares, cloisters and narrow streets that take us back in time. Most of the centre is pedestrianised and above the walls there is a 4 km tree-lined promenade that provides a fascinating view of the city and a relaxing route that can also be taken by bicycle (there are several shops where you can rent them)

Florence is one of the most famous cities of art in the world. Cradle of the Renaissance, it has hosted artists and architects such as Michelangelo, Leonardo, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Raffaello, Botticelli and many others. There are so many things to see in this city that it is difficult to summarise them in this guide, but if you come to us I will be happy to help you choose. Florence is about 45 minutes by car from the house and is also connected by bus and train to Lucca.

Pisa is world-famous for its leaning tower, but surely the entire Piazza dei Miracoli has earned this name for its incredible beauty. So if you decide to visit it, do not overlook the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery. You will definitely have to buy your ticket in advance (at least to climb the tower). Pisa, however, is also worth a visit for its historical centre, for Piazza dei Cavalieri with the palace housing the prestigious Scuola Normale, for the lungarni with the small Church of the Spina or the small hidden squares such as Piazza della Pera.

A drive of just over two hours takes you to Siena and this fantastic city is definitely worth a day of your holiday if you have come to us to discover Tuscany. Piazza del Campo is certainly the most famous place, also because in the summer it hosts the famous Palio, an event that originated in the Middle Ages, but is still fundamental for the Sienese (I advise you not to go on those days because the city is taken by storm). Certainly, however, another unmissable place is the Duomo, its famous façade, the sculpted pulpit, the inlaid floors (not always visible), the baptistery. Finally, I recommend you try the handmade panforte, a very good medieval cake. If you have come as far as Siena, think about going as far as Monteriggioni. The tiny village will make you think you have stepped back in time to the Middle Ages.

Monterosso is only one of the Cinque Terre, but they are all worth a visit both for the beautiful sea and the small towns. The best way to visit them is to drive to La Spezia (an hour's journey) and from there take the train that stops in each one. If you like walking, I recommend you take the footpaths that connect them, which until the 1960s was the only way, apart from the boat, to get from one town to another. They are rather long routes with some challenging climbs, but the views are breathtaking.

If you want to take a dip into the Middle Ages, I certainly recommend a visit to this city. It takes just under two hours to get there by car. This town and its famous towers, squares and alleys are almost as they were hundreds of years ago.

The small town of Vicopisano is about a 30-minute drive away, but it is definitely a hidden gem worth a stop. After conquering Pisa, the Medici family sent Brunelleschi here to build a fortress. I recommend it for the castle, its alleys, the magnificent (and unknown) medieval wooden statues kept in the main church, and the hospitable people.

Visite turistiche

Especially in spring and autumn, I recommend a walk through this magical place. This lake, its colours and its silences were a great inspiration for Puccini in writing his music.

This huge and beautiful Carthusian monastery is about 20 minutes' drive away and is worth a visit both for the building complex (unfortunately only a small part of which can be visited) and for the Natural History Museum, which is particularly interesting for children and young people

Marble from the Apuan Alps and the Carrara area is also famous worldwide thanks to works such as Michelangelo's David. Today, some of these quarries can be visited because they are no longer in activity. I recommend, for example, the one in Fantiscritti, which with a guided tour takes you inside the mountain into breathtaking spaces where, surrounded by white marble, you have the feeling of being in a sacred, majestic place, the work of man but also a spectacle of nature. Afterwards, I recommend you stop by Colonnata and taste the traditional Lardo.

Monte Pisano offers the possibility of many excursions on foot or by bicycle (mountain bike) among woods, small churches (like the one in Mirteto in the photo), abandoned castles (of Ripafratta and of the Verruca), watch towers, the aqueduct built by the Medici family, woods and very beautiful views towards Lucca and Pisa

This beach is a 20-minute drive from the villa. It is within a nature park so parking is not plentiful but it is worth seeking out. The sandy beach is both free and equipped although the facilities (except the bar) are beyond the dunes, which makes it quieter and more relaxing.

A good restaurant offering both pizza and meat or fish, with good prices and a 3-minute drive or 15-minute walk away. I absolutely recommend it. When my brother comes back to visit from the UK he always wants to book a table here.
