Coffee

Walk down Woodburn. They have quite good coffee--one of the best in the city. However, where they really shine is with their pastries. I love the almond croissant. This is like 1/4 mile from where you're staying--a lovely morning walk to start your day.

This coffee shop is the furthest away of any of the shops I've listed. I wouldn't even mention it for that reason, but in my opinion, they have the best coffee in town. If you like going to the best coffee shops in the cities you visit, you'll definitely want to check this one out. And if you really want to see it at it's best, go to the Analog portion of the shop. There, they offer their experimental coffees and exquisite coffee cocktails (non-alcoholic).

They have a couple locations in town, but the one in Oakley is likely the closest and also the best atmosphere. Oakley Square is a nice spot to visit, and you won't be disappointed with this coffee!

Walk down Woodburn. They have two of my favorite local beers! In the warmer months, they have a beer called Salmon Shorts Sighting. In the colder months (maybe year round actually), their Chocolate Cherry Stout is fantastic--if you're into that kinda thing. They also sell some spirits from their sister distillery.

Long walk down Woodburn... or a short drive. Since I first went here a couple years ago, they have been one of my two favorite breweries in the city (along with Braxton). The reason is that they are constantly experimenting. If you like dark beers, or very flavorful beers (not talking about adding fruit flavor to the beer), I think you'll love this place. Do a flight. Have the Chickow on the flight. They actually have two locations right across from each other now. One is just a taphouse, and you'll see a bigger variety of beers there, but no food. Then in 2021, they opened up Listermann Trail House, is a restaurant that serves many of their beers. You might not see their latest experiments in the restaurant.

Walk down McMillan. This is the closest restaurant to the house and it's a Cincinnati classic chain. Very family friendly. WITH THAT SAID, temper your expectations. My wife has Cincinnati roots and was raised to love the stuff. I went into it with expectations of gourmet chili and was horrified when I found out it is NOT that. It took me 7 years to come around to the stuff, but now I'm fully proselytized. Resistance is futile. There are many other locations around town.

Cincinnati's largest art museum and it is FREE! Located in Eden Park. Walkable, but you may prefer to drive as it is up a hill. You can find Van Gogh, Picasso, and many other masters here. There's a book on the shelf in the basement that highlights some of the artwork there.

This is a very nice small theatre in Over-the-Rhine. Not a bad seat in the house. About half the shows they do are Shakespeare plays, and half are others. They do a good job, always putting their own spin on the plays, so it won't be stale. A very nice (but pricey) evening is getting a quick early dinner in OTR, then watching a play, then getting drinks after. Tons of options for food and drink in OTR.

As much as anywhere, Cincinnati was a heart of the underground railroad and the front line of the abolition movement. The Freedom Center is a museum about the underground railroad, slavery and abolition. I've also seen exhibits there about modern day slavery. Tickets are around $15 for adults.

Best Breweries outside Walking Distance

There are over 50 breweries in the Cincinnati area. I certainly haven't been to them all, but I've been to most, and the major ones. Below are some of my favorites and the most popular.
Along with Listermann, they are one of my favorite breweries in town. They go big trying new stuff, and I enjoy that. Their main location is over the river in Covington, but they also have a location in Pendleton... which is near downtown/OTR.

Probably the most widely-distributed craft brewery in town (assuming you don't count Sam Adams). They are very popular and have a huge, really cool taphouse in OTR. There's a nice rooftop to it. I don't think their beers are the best in town, but they are good and very popular. Cautions: Parking can be tough there.

This is probably the second most popular brewery in town behind Rhinegeist. They might actually be equally popular locally, but I think Rhinegeist has a wider distribution network outside the city. MadTree is in Oakley, which is a cool area to check out. Another huge taproom with nice outdoor space.

So this brewery was originally just a restaurant and brewery on the north side of the road. The white building had apparently been a brothel like 100 years ago, they had good food, and I liked their scotch ale quite a bit. Well, since then they bought up a TON of real estate across the street and it resembles a circus. They've got a burger bar, volleyball, I think Tennis, access to a bike trail, and probably more stuff that I can't think of. And of course they serve their beers. This one is a little bit of a drive east, but an easy drive and not obnoxiously far. My one gripe is that, of their outdoor seating, only about a third of it is shielded from the sun, and the place gets packed. So if you're going on a hot day, bring your sunscreen.

Sightseeing

Just a gem, and in walking distance. Great views of the river and downtown. If you walk there, you'll take Victory Parkway there and first see what's called the Twin Lakes on your left. There's a great river view right past the man-made lakes. Keep going down the road and you'll pass Krohn Conservatory, which is a plant conservatory that's worth checking out if you're into that thing. Once you pass the Krohn, you can veer left down a walking path labeled the Hinkel Floral Trail. Walk through that and you'll eventually pop out by another man-made lake called Mirror lake. Then we usually circle back and come home. The loop I just described is 3-4 miles. However, if you kept going past mirror lake, you'd see the Cincinnati Art Museum up on the hill. Beyond that, there's a super-cute neighborhood called Mt. Adams, which has great views of its own.
