Neighbourhoods

Stuart Park is a lovely, leafy, quiet neighbourhood that boarders Darwin’s CBD. It has many beautiful parks for you to choose from to take a walk, do a workout, practice some yoga, kick a footy or enjoy some sundowners. Take a walk around the neighbourhood to explore for yourself! You’ll find one of these parks just down the road 150meters on Margaret Street. Speaking of parks…. George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens is approximately a 1km walk from City’s Edge Apartment and covers 42 hectares of north Australian and other tropical species. I highly recommend taking a stroll through here – check out the veggie garden, waterfall, banyan trees and pop into Eva’s café for something to drink or eat. The Darwin Botanic Gardens have an app, which includes free self-guided walking tours and points of interest in the gardens. Head to your app store to download it! For more information, see https://nt.gov.au/leisure/parks-reserves/find-a-park/george-brown-darwin-botanic-gardens Stuart Park Shops are located around 650 metres from City’s Edge Apartment. Here you can find a convenience store that sells all the essentials (including booze), a few restaurants/cafes such as Bumble Bee Café (try their homemade chocolate), Yogi’s Way (feel free to use our loyalty card – you might score yourself a free coffee!), a St. Vincent de Paul shop, a pharmacy, doctor…and a few others. Our favourite local café is just 300 meters from City’s Edge Apartment - Sweet Brew. They serve a nice coffee and have great baked goods – yummiest almond croissants! You can grab yourself takeaway or dine in - check out their back area if you do dine in. Sweet Brew’s sister café (Rays) is located in Smith Street in Darwin City, and has a large alfresco area for you to enjoy your coffee and meal – it is worth checking out if you are heading that way! Another favourite café is located in Parap (2.5kms away) – Laneway Speciality Coffee. Other recommended cafes include Rabbit Hole (Smith Street Mall, Darwin City), Besser (Winnellie), Café Central (Nightcliff), Boatshed (Cullen Bay), and the Sunday morning pop-up café at East Point. Gyms, Yoga and Pilates Studios are located just around the corner from City’s Edge Apartment. F45 Training and Encore Pilates and Wellness are almost right next door to Sweet Brew (so approx. 300 meters from home) - you can also find Anytime Fitness around here - a 24-hour gym. East Point Nature Reserve is a great place to visit for a walk, run, ride, skate, picnic, bbq, sundowner, bush walk, bird watching, wallaby gazing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking…the list goes on! Here you will find the famous Peewees restaurant, with excellent ocean views and five star dining experience. This is a must-do while you visit Darwin! Lake Alexander is also at East Point – there’s often a guy who rents SUPs/kayaks and other water toys. There’s a playgrounds for the kids, and bbq’s, if you want to take some food of your own to cook. During the dry season, you will often find pop-up food vans including Kens Crepes and Taco Daze…to name a few. Health and Beauty venues are located near home. There is a bulk billing Dr just around the corner called Top End Medical Clinic. It is right next door to Officeworks. A great beautician is located in Parap called Anita’s health and beauty. There’s plenty of options for beauticians in the city – just Google to pick which one takes your fancy. Restaurants, pubs, ice cream etc…see below for favourites… • Alfonsions (Italian - pizza, pasta, salads) – Mitchell Street, Darwin City • La Granita (Italian gelato, granita, coffee) – Mitchell Street, Darwin City • Hanuman (Indian – famous restaurant) – Mitchell Street, Darwin City • Exotic (Indian) – Cullen Bay • Chow (Vietnamese) – Waterfront • Three Mums (Vietnamese lunch time) – Voyagers Arcade, Darwin City • Sumatra Café (Indonesian lunch time) - Voyagers Arcade, Darwin City • Sari Rasa (Indonesian) – Darwin City • The Cavanagh Hotel (pub grub, live music, good vibes) – Cavanagh street, Darwin City • Hot Tamale (Mexican, cocktails, waterfront views, good vibes) – Waterfront • Prickles (Mexican) – Parap • Lolas Pergola (circus themed pub w good pub grub on the water - great vibes) – Cullen Bay • Six Tanks (brewery with pub grub) – Mitchell Street, Darwin City • One Mile Brewery (local brewery with pub grub) – Winnellie • Pony + Sid (take home meals – check their Instagram account for more info) – Winnellie • Ski Club (pub grub, live music, ocean views) – Fannie Bay • Moorish (tapas, sangria) – Darwin City • Good Thanks (burgers and beers) – Darwin City • Lucky Bat (café, restaurant, homemade pizza and great food all round) – Nightcliff • Little Miss Korea (Korean food) – Austin Lane, Darwin City • Snapper Rocks (seafood and salads) – Waterfront • Various delicious pop-up food trucks - Nightcliff Foreshore Cullen Bay Is approximately three kms from City’s Edge Apartment. You can walk here or take an Uber, which should cost around $10, or take the bus. There’s a fun pub/restaurant called Lola’s Pergola, which is right on the water at the marina and is circus themed. It’s great for all – kids, adults, friends and family! Right across the road is Cullen Bay Beach – a great place to watch the iconic Territory sunset. This is a favourite according to locals. Grab yourself takeaway pizza from Alfonsinos (best pizza ever) and head down to enjoy sunset! If you like Indian food, there’s a great restaurant Called Exotic – very well priced and right on the water. There are also gyms, beauty parlours, pizza place, a Syrian restaurant (delicious food), fish and chips and a few others, including the populate Boatshed café. If you’re interested in heading to Mandorah for a day, you can take the ferry from Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal – check google for times. Weekends in Darwin involve eating loads of delicious market food! Saturday morning markets at Parap are definitely a favourite among the locals – get a laksa from Yati or Marys, eat a famous Ken’s Crepes, buy a juice, drink a coffee or indulge in the any of the other treats that take your fancy! You can find some clothes and nick-nack shops here too, but it’s mostly all about the good stuff – food. Sunday morning markets are in Nightcliff with similar vibes to Parap markets but usually some live music too. Sunday evening you can stroll down to Mindil Beach to experience the famous Mindil Beach Markets and watch the beautiful sunset. Given the hot temps in Darwin, swimming is a crowd favourite. Head down to the waterfront to take a dip or experience the wave pool. You can also find swimming pools in Parap and Nightcliff. There’s a fantastic infinity swimming pool at Mindil Beach Casino (and a lagoon style swimming pool) which (I think) you are welcome to use so long as you purchase a drink or meal. There’s a few restaurants at the casino, which boast views of Darwin Harbour. If you’re curious about swimming in the ocean, do so at your own risk. Some locals choose to go for a quick dip during the dry season (May – July) due to a lower risk of box jellyfish however it is strongly recommended you do not swim in the ocean outside of these months. On that note, it’s worth mentioning – do not swim in any rivers in the top end! Always read signage regarding swimming and if you are unsure, ask somebody (or Google). Nightlife happens mostly on Mitchell Street. You can find a whole range of pubs, bars and clubs here – Tap Bar, Monsoons, Shenanigans, Opium, Deck Bar….there is an LGBT friendly club on Smith Street called Throb - they do a drag show around midnight/1am, which is quite a fun experience! A wine bar worth checking out is called Stonehouse – its located on Cavenagh street. You can also buy takeaway alcohol from there if you fancy a finer drop than the typical bottleos. Some cool bars have recently popped up in Austin Lane (aka Graffiti lane due to all of the street art here) which is just around the corner from Stonehouse – these bars include Babylon (same owners as Lola’s as you may notice from their vibe), Loading Bay (cocktail bar) and Charlie’s bar/restaurant. And of course, there is the Mindil Beach Casino which has a few restaurants/bars and punting. For something a bit more chilled, you may wish to check out the Trailer Boat Club, Ski Club and/or Sailing Club – these all have ocean views, booze, food and good vibes and are kid/family friendly! Gone Bush - locals love heading bush. See below for some popular and recommended spots: - Litchfield National Park is located approximately 1.5 hours drive from Darwin and is definitely worth the drive! While you are there check out Buely Rockhole, Florence Falls, Walkers Creek, Wangi, Tolmer Waterfalls but be sure to check the NT Parks and Wildlife website to check if they are open/open for swimming. Note, there are crocodiles in the top end so if somewhere is shut for swimming – do not swim!! Note, some of these locations require a 4WD so make sure you check this before heading off. - Berry Springs is a great option if you don’t feel like driving as far as Litchfield but still want to see some nature. Cool off with a swim in the natural springs then pop into the Berry Springs Tavern for a drink and some lunch – this is an iconic Territory pub and a must see for visitors! If you’re interested in seeing some furry friends, the Territory Wildlife Park is this way too. - Robin Falls – Adelaide River is located about an hour’s drive from Darwin. There’s usually markets on a Sunday in Adelaide River that might be worth checking out. Think - small, Aussie, country-town markets – jams, preserves, Akubra’s (and the like) for sale. Ask the locals where Robin Falls are, they’ll be more than happy to help you find your way. Tourist attraction suggestions - Jumping Crocodile Cruise, Adelaide River - Yellow Water Cruise, Kakadu - Sunset Sail, Cullen Bay Note: Please ensure you turn the power off when you leave the house. Please consider the environment and do not leave the air-conditioner running if you are not using it. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. "Wartime history experience While in Darwin take some time to learn about the city’s wartime efforts during WWI and II. The Defence of Darwin Experience at the Military Museum is a great place to get your wartime history fix. Learn about the bombing of Darwin and the city’s role in WWII through the gallery and multimedia presentations. Check out the displays of artillery pieces, vehicles, uniforms and firearms at the museum, or head to Stokes Hill Wharf and the Bombing of Darwin Harbour exhibit at the RFDS Tourist Facility. "Historical harbour views Head towards the Esplanade where you’ll find Bicentennial Park perched on the cliffs of Darwin Harbour. Visit the Cenotaph, which is Darwin’s first war memorial commemorating Australians who lost their lives in WWI, and the Aboriginal men and women whose bush skills assisted the Army during WWII to protect the remote northern coastline. Take a stroll under the tropical trees along The Esplanade to Parliament House. Mitchell Street is close by, where there are many lunch options to choose from. WWII oil storage tunnels Continue on to the WWII oil storage tunnels at the Darwin Waterfront Precinct. The tunnels were created following the bombing of the oil storage tanks in the first Japanese air raid; today, two of these tunnels are open for viewing. Follow an experienced guide through the tunnels and learn how they were constructed under harsh conditions to protect the city’s diesel and furnace oil from aerial bombardment."

"Go face-to-face with a croc After lunch, make your way to Crocosaurus Cove in the heart of Darwin on Mitchell Street. Here you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the largest reptile on the planet, the saltwater crocodile, and learn about a variety of fish and reptile species at the aquarium. There’s a twice-daily crocodile and fish feeding show that’s not to be missed. And, if you are feeling particularly brave, climb into the Cage of Death for a face-to-face encounter with one of the largest saltwater crocodiles in captivity. It’s the ultimate adrenaline rush!"

"Back to nature If you feel a need for some R&R today, you can’t go past Berry Springs Nature Park (usually open from May–November), located just 47km south of Darwin. Used as a recreation camp for armed forces personnel during the war, today it’s a popular spot for a barbecue and a dip in the clear freshwater pools. If you bring your goggles along you’ll be able to spot native fish and other aquatic life. Get active this afternoon and check out one of the bushwalking tracks, or learn more about the wartime history of Berry Springs Nature Park at the interpretive centre."

"Admire the street art If you’re looking for a change of scenery, try taking some of the backstreets in Darwin. Many of our backstreets and laneways have been covered in street art, including floor-to-rooftop murals and paintings to brighten up our city. View impressive artwork of local flora and fauna as you wander around the city. If you’d prefer someone else show you the way, laneway walking tours are available. These guided tours show you the best of Darwin’s laneway art and tell the stories behind the paintings and the emerging artistic talent."
