Every Saturday the whole center of Alacati is taken over by the market. It remains one of the biggest and best markets along the coast. You will find virtually everything you need, including freshly made gözleme (thin pancakes stuffed with white cheese and parsley). Fruit, veggies, spices, clothes, beach gear – here is the place to get it.

Canbaba is a favourite of mine; all kinds of seafood can be had, cooked any way you like. I go for the lobster – but watch it so you don't order too many of the mese. Then you will be full already when the lobster arrives from the grill. Sunsets over Chios come with no extra charge. Web www.istakozcucanbaba.com. Tel 0232 722 12 15.

Down by the harbor you will find the restaurant Crete. Their kahvaltı (breakfast) is filled with homemade stuff, and the tasty seafood lunch and dinner are handsomely matched by delightful service from the family owners. Overlooking the busy little port in front of the restaurant the peaceful scenery is best enjoyed from the second floor. Tel 0232 725 13 55.
