Sightseeing

The famous town of books! Hay on wye is a truly beautiful town (now names the pretties town in Wales!) famous for its bookshops, independent shops and annual summer literacy festival - Hay Festival and How The Light Gets In. It has heaps of pubs, cafes and restaurants - all with amazing food and many vegan/vegetarian options too. Every shop in the town is independently run so there is ALWAYS something for everyone and pretty much all shops & eateries allow dogs too! The river footpaths are woth venturing and also the outstanding Hay Bluff & Twmpa peaks for the keen hikers, with stunning views over the Brecon Beacons. Also for necessities there’s a supermarket, butchers, local veg shop, deli, post office, fuel station, etc. Hay on Wye is must visit if you are coming to the area!

With its wide open mountain spaces and vibrant green landscapes, tree covered canal walks, lake loops or hidden waterfalls walks the Brecon Beacons is perfect place for it all! The mountains are the main attraction, of course, with most people setting out to conquer the distinctive Pen y Fan (Pronounced 'pen ee van'), the highest peak in South Wales. If you can brave the early start, the sunrise on the summit will blow your mind! There are an abundance of peaks to chose from, some paths more travelled than others but every one of them are worth the hike. If you're not much of a up-hill person you can head into Brecon to Brecon Canal Basin. From here is a flat stretch of a walk (up to 35 miles!) following the canal just for walkers and bikers. It has additional stops on the walk to go down to the River Usk - a truly natural beauty! Or spend a whole/half day doing the 4 Waterfalls Walk, literally from one amazing waterfall to the next even walking behind some or being brave and diving into the pools below them!

Neighbourhoods

The cabin is situated in a very small hamlet with only a couple of houses behind it, surrounded by stunning and undisturbed countryside farm land. The neighbours are very quiet and kind, always looking out for one another so it’s a very safe place to be however the cabin faces away from all houses so you still keep your privacy and space ☺️ There are ample walks from the doorstep of the cabin or take short drives to many, many more - all of which are in the guest book or additional local trail books provided for you in the cabin. If you're an early riser then i would hugely reccommend the walk up Milton Hill behind the cabin at sunrise for some really spectacular colours and views!

Activity

The wye valley is truly stunning and well worth going canoeing down the river for the day/half day. Row slowly down taking in the gorgeous surroundings and stop off at pebble beaches along the way for picnics or bbq's before ending up at the pick up point - the pub! Great place for food and beers🍻

Conselho para os viajantes

Transporte

A car is the best way to get around

From main roads to country single track roads weaving through green fields, the best and fastest way to get around here is always by car. In the towns hay on wye and Kington (both 15 mins away) there are bus services and the nearest train station is in Hereford. Alternatively it’s lovely countryside to cycle around too!

Before you go for dinner

Feel free to online search Hay on Wye or Kington for an abundance of places to eat - I also supply contact info and sample menus in the cabin so you can see what tickles your tastebuds! There are a few great but slightly hidden places slighty nearer in Whitney on Wye, Clyro, Gladestry, lettin and Eardisley. Most places usually allow walk in-ins but to make sure you definitely get a table at your chosen restaurant it's worth ringing a day or two ahead. Alternatively message me for some recommendations, i'm a big foodie!
O que levar

What to pack

The cabin is fully kitted out for all your needs and the only things you will need are food/drink and clothes. I would recommend bringing wellies/boots for the colder/wetter seasons as it can get a little muddy sometimes. If you can’t commit to a digital detox, I would bring a portable charger as the cabin has no mains electric or sockets 🔌 Everthing else is supplied: cookware, tablewear, towels and linen, blankets, books, yoga mats, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, cleaning products, logs and kindling, etc so you don't have to pack heavy!
