Faugères is a small, pretty village, 25 minutes north of Bezier, in Languedoc. The village has a cave, Dame Jane, which serves lovely meals, wine and coffee. This is less than 2 minutes walk from our house. There is also a bakery within walking distance. Les 3 moulins are approximately 20 minutes walk from the house. Pézenas is a lovely, vibrant artisan town. The weekly markets are well worth a visit. Multiple places for an enjoyable lunch or dinner.

Béziers is the birthplace of Pierre-Paul Riquet, the founder of the Canal du Midi. The Cathedral of St. Nazarius, built in the 13th century, is a Gothic fortress dominating the city. It is uniquely original. For a breathtaking view of the whole of Béziers, head to the Bishop's Palace Garden (Jardin de l'Évêché) downhill from the cathedral. In the centre of Béziers take a walk around Allées Paul-Riquet, a pleasant avenue lined with plane trees, shops and lively café terraces.

It's a lovely place to wander around and stop for lunch., including fresh mussels and oysters from the Étang de Thau. The Etang de Thau is a large lagoon, a sea-lake, covering about 7500 hectares that is separated from the Mediterranean by a long thin cordon of raised sand. The Mediterranean can be accessed from the Etang at Marseillan and Sete and the Canal du Midi enters the etang at Marseillan. The Etang de Thau is the largest of the lagoons along the Languedoc coast. The Etang has long been an important resource in the region. The region has been inhabited since neolithic times, although it was the Greeks and Romans who were the first to extract salt from the sea in the etang. Nowadays, as well as salt, the Etang de Thau is an important region for supplying oysters and mussels.
