The beloved Last Chance Gulch is where it all began for Helena. The gold may be gone now but our “Main St.” has shopping and dining options — Cobblestone clothes, 406 (yes, we’re even proud of our area code!) clothes and souvenirs, the Hub coffee, Big Dipper ice cream, the Windbag Saloon (family-friendly now… just read it’s colorful history you’ll understand), Ten-Mile brewery, Martin Wines, and the Parrot Confectionery are some of our favorites!

The Alley was built in the 1870s by a Pennsylvania brick and stone mason named Louis Reeder. It is the oldest intact piece of early Helena. The property is a strong link to the beginnings of a settlement here, offering insights into the lives of miners, the Chinese influence, building techniques of the time, and life of the common men and women who came here seeking their fortune. The buildings in Reeder's Alley are designated as a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places with the National Park Service.

Lovely, family friendly boat tour down the Missouri River. https://gatesofthemountains.com “The evening of July 19,1805, was a hot one in the wilderness that would later become Montana. On the Missouri River, not far from present day Helena, the hardy members of the Lewis and Clark expedition toiled to move upstream. Rock embankments made towing from shore impossible, and the deep channel forced the men to row rather than pole their boats forward. Suddenly, there loomed before them towering rock formations unlike any they had ever seen. From both sides of the river, limestone cliffs rose to a spectacular height of 1200 feet. “In many places,” wrote Meriwether Lewis, “the rocks seem ready to tumble on us.” At each bend in the waterway, great stone walls seemed to block passage, only to open like gentle giant gates as the expedition drew near. In his journal, Meriwether wrote: “I shall call this place: GATES OF THE MOUNTAINS.””

O que levar

Don’t forget a jacket!

Summers in Montana are absolutely beautiful and occasionally you may hear us complain about the heat, however, there’s nothing holding that heat in at night under our big sky. You’ll appreciate having a jacket for an evening walk or just sitting on the front porch.
