Best Parks for Hiking in Southern Illinois

We have another category for our favorite hiking trails within the parks.
Truly our favorite place- 2 gorgeous waterfalls, amazing bluffs, picnic areas, playgrounds and both easy and challenging trails. In fact, we have a family tradition to do a little mushroom hunting in the spring around some secret spots off of Round Bluff Trail. Then, after opening presents on Christmas morning we take a walk on Big Rocky Hollow Trail (aka "the waterfall trail").

A lot like Ferne Clyffe but just so happens to have a divine fried chicken restaurant (Giant City Lodge). Climb the water tower for a scenic view overlooking the treetops. On a clear day you can stop Bald Knob Cross to the west. Stop by the cabins there and you’ll recognize a few scenes from the movie Gone Girl.

Best Trails to Hike in Southern Illinois

Big Rocky Hallow Trail is a beautiful, easy out-and-back chat gravel trail that is safe for strollers, pups and durable wheeled devices. The trail is 0.7 miles one way. It leads to a 100 ft waterfall that is creek fed. The best time to see the fall is after a big rain or during the wet season (winter-spring). Even when it is not flowing in the summer, you can soak in the canopy of tree shade, gorgeous bluffs that flank the trail and do plenty of hiking on either side. Note: If you are planning on more hiking, be sure to check out Hawk's Cave, just on the opposite side of the parking lot!

Hawk's Cave not actually a cave, but it's the largest shelter bluff in the state of Illinois. It's an impressive bluff that extends over a shallow grave of boulders that is fun for all ages, especially children that love to climb.

Best Waterfall Trails in Southern Illinois

Easily our favorite waterfall. Easy to walk to, plenty to see, and fun rocks to climb by the 100 foot falls. It is our family tradition to take a walk to this waterfall Christmas Day. There is never a bad time to visit! Always be safe (rocks + water= falling accidents!) and remember that almost all southern Illinois waterfalls are intermediate waterfalls which means they are best seen during the wet season (winter/spring) or after a heavy rain. They will dry up during the dry season. 📸 by Grant Twiss

Bork Falls is a breathtaking twin waterfall that flows into quite the swimming hole. WARNING: The road to get to Bork Falls is commonly washed out and very steep. Additionally, you drive over the rockbed top of the falls to to park and then descend on the trail to the base. I highly recommend 4 wheel drive or at least a high-sitting vehicle. (I last drove it in my Lincoln MKZ and it took a few hours before the color returned to my face.) Possibly with a regular car, but not recommended.
