Guide to the Bruce Peninsula...

Sightseeing

This quaint bay-side village is my favourite little town on the Peninsula. Quieter and less developed than Tobermory, it is no less beautiful with a waterfront beach and swimming area with a view like no other. Be sure to stop at Garden in Thyme on the road in from Highway 6 for some market produce and baked goods! While in town, check out the Dandy Lion Gift Shop and eat a nice meal at the Lion's Head Inn a few steps from the beach or Rachel's Cafe on the Main Street! If hiking is your jam, you can catch a shuttle to the end of Moore Street where you can hike out atop the official "lion's head" and escarpment cliffs and down to the water. This is a trail that takes you out and back. Be sure to follow the blazes, wear appropriate footwear, take snacks and water, and return before dark. This trail is rugged, and takes a number of hours out and back, but the views are unparalleled! Fuel The only fuel is available in Ferndale, on the highway west of Lion's Head, or fill up before leaving Wiarton. There are more and more EV stations popping up all of the time! Parking Expect to pay, but it is worth it and parking fees support upgrades around town. There is a large lot at the Community Centre, which is a short and picturesque walk to downtown and the beach. Restrooms Some businesses allow visitors to use their washrooms. There is a public facility down at the waterfront. The community centre may also be open for this use as parking is now directed there.

A short hike in from the main parking lot, these naturally created sea caves are spectacular and offer a cool respite from summer heat. Wear sturdy footwear, stay on the paths, and don't miss the second cave beyond the first. Just follow the rock wall. Please do not write on the rock. There are millions of microscopic snails living on the cave walls, and the writing destroys their natural biome! There is a small pavillion near the parking lot for a picnic, but I would drive further down the main road to the waterfront for that.

Parking Expect to pay for parking, but know your visit is worth the drive! Go early and park at the Community Centre to be close to everything. Gas/Fuel Your best places to fill your tank with gas are in Wiarton before heading north, or in Ferndale, half-way to Tobermory. There is also a small gas station as you come into Tobermory on the right: Hoppy's Gas Bar. Gas stations on the peninsula close early, so don't delay! There are more and more EV stations opening up on the Bruce, as well! Public Restrooms Beside the Chart Shop on the north side of the harbour there is a public restroom. The Sweet Shop and the Coffee Shop also have washrooms open to the public, but there may be a longer line. Finally, the Community Centre where I recommend you park also has public facilities, but they can be REALLY smelly! Bank Machine/ATM The Royal Bank is located on the left-hand side as you drive into Tobermory. If you want to use cash, I recommend bringing some or going to one of the banks in Wiarton before heading north. Sometimes Tobermory is so busy the ATM runs out of cash! Favourite attractions and things to do in Tobermory: Outdoor Adventures -Blue Heron Cruise to Flowerpot Island (many types of boat trips to consider!). I endorse Blue Heron Cruises as a local family run business who know the region well and support local community initiatives. While on Flowerpot, you might stop to swim at the flowerpots, take photos, or hike out to the lighthouse. There is a longer trail that circumnavigates the island that you may want to book a day-trip for in order to not be rushed. Take food as there are no restaurants on the island. The only washrooms are at the boat dock and the lighthouse (confirm there is one there upon your departure). -Little Cove Adventures - if you like to challenge yourself, Little Cove Adventures just south of town offers a really fun high ropes course! Reserve ahead! -Visit the Bruce Peninsula National Park Visitor Centre! For nature lovers this VC offers a spot to cool off and learn about the local region. The entire facility was designed and built locally, including all of the displays! Climb the tower for views over the lands and waters of the National Park and beyond! -Water Walk - along the harbour's south side there are boardwalks where you can walk along and get very close to the water. Shopping -There are many shops to explore. My favourites are: -Marco Polo for clothing and fun imports, -Blue Heron for high end marine and outdoor clothing, -Nature's Gifts for funky jewelry, -Reader's Haven for books and gift items, -The Chart Shop for local souvenirs and marine items. Restaurants -Best fish and chips in town come from Craigee's. I like to order take-out and then find a spot to sit outside and enjoy the view while I eat. Local fish served in generous proportions. -Della Rocca Pizzeria beside Nature's Gifts does wood fired pizza that is super yummy! -Tobermory Brew Pub - love it for atmosphere and more up-scale meals. If you are a meat eater, drink beer, and/or like charcuterie boards, this is the restaurant for you! -Tobermory Tacos - I have yet to go, but the word from friends is their tacos are great! -Coconut Joe's Harbour Bar and Grill - featured on television as a restaurant re-do/reno, this fun licensed outdoor grill offers a Tikki bar with a Tobermory vibe and good food! Outdoor dining at its best! -The Sweet Shop - This longstanding attraction is a must for those with a sweet tooth. Grab an ice cream and shop for confections! -The Coffee Shop - The best place to grab teas, coffees, and breakfast items. Drinks -If partying and drinking is your thing, the Tobermory Legion is always a good time in the evenings when they are open. Otherwise, the Crow's Nest is a popular "watering hole". Please don't drink and drive.

Parking Expect to pay. Go early if you want a spot along the water. The north end of the beach north of 6th St is less busy, but also farther from restaurants. After 5 or 6 pm, parking is free and the beach is less busy. Fuel/EV There are no gas stations in Sauble Beach, so fill up in Wiarton, Hepworth, or just north of Sauble Beach at Naves Service Centre (tends to be a bit expensive). There are few EV (if any) hook-ups in Sauble Beach that I am aware of. Restrooms Most businesses do not have public restrooms. There is a large facility in the main square in the heart of the village. There are also facilities along the beach. Please use them. Sauble has an issue with people digging holes on the beach to use as a washroom facility, which is obviously unsavoury for most other users and causes issues for workers and future visitors. And don't pee in the water! : ) Cooking/Bar-b-ques/Campfires on the Beach Not permitted. Instead, support local restaurants or cook here and take food with you. Sauble Beach is the absolute favourite for beach-goers, especially those who like to share their beach time with others and be a bit more social. This 6 km stretch of beach is one of the longest freshwater beaches in the world! Outdoor Adventures -The beach! Weak and non-swimmers should be very careful of large waves, undertows, and should not venture past sandbars which give false security of shallow waters. -Ascent Aerial Park - A high ropes challenge course like no other! For a family challenge with a view! Reserve ahead. _Just Puttin' Around Mini-Golf - very fun course for families or date night! -Sauble Falls Provincial Park - a ten minute drive north from Sauble Beach, this park features a raging river for picturesque photos and wading in spots (be careful!). There are canoe rentals above the Falls for those who want to paddle the river. -The classic Sauble Beach Arch at the main entrance - the quintessential photo opp at any time of day! Shopping: There are too many shops to mention, and it depends what you like. The main streets of Sauble have a very 1950s flare, which is only recently getting an upgrade. My favourites are The Patch, Grit & Grace, The Garage Clothing, Unique Pieces, Restaurants: -The Chocolate Shoppe -Laszlos Bistro and Pizza (best pizza!) -Caseros Taco Bus (all-time fave, GREAT tacos!) Solas for on the beach meals (go early, fun and waterview) -Rustic Pizza (for pizza on/near the beach) -Beaver Tails - Dairy Queen -Heydays is getting great reviews, but I have not gone yet. It and The June Motel were featured on Netflix! -There are also many food trucks roaming Sauble, and I would recommend any of them for more interesting and affordable food. Note: Most restaurants close by 8 pm. Golf: The Sauble Golf Course is popular and has a fun clubhouse/restaurant with typical pub food.

A quaint waterfront village on Georgian Bay, Big Bay's most exciting feature aside from the cobble beach is the General Store with homemade ice cream. Grab some ice cream, and walk out on the pier for a view of some large freshwater islands. Some people like to jump off the dock into the water, beware of large waves and know that the water here is deep! There are no gas stations between Wiarton and Big Bay, but there ARE spectacular views and look-off points where you can stop to take in the view.

Upscale shopping and a beautiful waterfront are the signatures of this picturesque town. Be sure to get in line early for the Southampton Bakery (Bruce County "Potatoes" recommended!) - they sell out early! Southampton Olive Oil, several women's clothing stores, and Outlaw Brewery are favourites. My favourite restaurant to visit is the Walker House - great food, lots of options, comfy atmosphere, close to beach for a sunset walk. Southampton Market is an indoor market in an old warehouse building - find affordable items of all descriptions - great for a rainy day. Fairy Lake provides a short hike around this little inland lake, adjacent to the Bruce County Museum (also great for a rainy day!).

Neyaashiinigmiing is one of the most picturesque places on the Bruce Peninsula. There is a lighthouse to visit, but it is a VERY long drive. You can access two bluffs here to hike along the Bruce Trail: Malcolm Bluff (end to end) and Jones' Bluff (loop). The best attraction is the annual Pow-Wow, the third weekend in August each year.

This very short hiking trail takes you through an incredibly rare ecosystem for South-Western Ontario: fen. A fen is a type of wetland where there is very little flow of water in or out of the ecosystem, and where the water becomes acidic. The fen is home to rare plants like the carnivorous Pitcher Plant, and Sundew. Stay on the boardwalk - your footprints will otherwise take decades to disappear and this fragile ecosystem is small and cannot weather much damage. You may also see interesting shorebirds from the road.

This inland lake is a wildlife sanctuary, a bird-watcher's paradise, and a great place to visit in the evenings for dark, starlit skies. Please talk in hushed tones, drive slowly to avoid crossing wildlife, and take out any garbage to preserve this special place. Local farmers are the caretakers of this preserve, please do not enter their farm fields (they have been known to spread manure around visitors who do not respect their crops!).

Bluewater Park is one of Wiarton's hidden gems. Featuring tennis courts, a ball diamond, swimming pool, covered pavillion, playground, boardwalk, Wiarton Willie statue, beach, marina, splashpad, the pier, Coal Shed Willie's restaurant, and more, this park has something for everyone. A great location for watching the sunRISE, or an evening walk. If you follow the boardwalk through the campground, past the marina, and down the road beyond the water treatment plant, you can access the spiral staircase to the Corran, an historic spot (old mansion ruins). If you plan to hike to the Corran, wear good footwear and take water and snacks.

Owen Sound is our most urban centre within driving distance. For some, Owen Sound holds a certain charm featuring beautiful old homes, the River District downtown shopping and city centre, the winter Festival of Northern Lights, Summerfolk Music Festival, museums and art galleries (Tom Thomson Art Gallery, Billy Bishop Museum, Grey County Museum and more), local downtown shops (Heartwood, Bare Birch, Sweetpea, The Rocking Horse, the Artists Co-op, Dr. Cobbler, Phoenix Bookstore, the Ginger Press, Shoppers [clothing]), the Georgian Bay Centre for the Arts, Kelso Park, Harrison Park (my absolute favourite!), the waterfall tour, weekly Attack Junior A hockey games, and a new YMCA. Favourite restaurants in town include Casero, The Curry House, Mudtown Station and Brewery, The Yard, Shorty's Bar and Grill, Sizzlin, Europa, and for something more generic, Montana's. For a good breakfast, try the Boot and Blade. For vegan fare, Sprout. A fun family outing in the fall is to the salmon ladders where salmon jump the ladders to reach their spawning grounds (and sometimes trout in the spring!). Outside of Owen Sound next to the Grey County Museum is Morland Place, a really interesting house and grounds which is a favourite photography spot and place for roaming.

The Corran is the former home of local MP, Alexander McNeil and his wife Hester. Burned in the early 1970s, the stone ruins provide a picturesque backdrop for picnics, short walks, and adventures down the spiral staircase to the lakeshore! Depending on the season, you will also see many species of flowers, and can imagine the rose gardens of the McNeil family. If you are a strong swimmer with snorkel gear, you might look on a calm day for the shipwreck off-shore, nearby to the spiral staircase.

Favourite Swimming Spots

If you are visiting Bruce's Caves, this is one spot you may consider for a swim and a picnic afterwards. The beach is rocky, so take water shoes and enjoy the cold waters of Georgian Bay! There are fewer people here than other waterfront parks, usually. Keep children and non-swimmers within arms reach!

Another great, family friendly beach, Sandy Beach offers one of the few beaches with sands instead of rock. Warmer waters often roll in here on the gentler waves, as this beach is somewhat sheltered from the larger lake by a small peninsula. Camp Celtic does share this beach (the most western end), so be aware of the children enjoying their camp experience, smile and wave, and share the beach willingly with them - they are having the time of their life and kids need this outdoor time during the pandemic! There is a handy washroom facility here, but you may want to take some toilet paper in case it is out.

This is one of my favourite swimming spots on the Bruce Peninsula. Shallower waters until you walk out make this ideal for those who want to simply wade or enjoy a beach day, and the water is a bit warmer for those who want to enjoy a good swim. It is sheltered by islands from the larger lake, and there are porta-pottie facilities. A short 12 minute drive from my house! Great sunset views. Sandy bottom.

This cobble beached swimming spot warms up later in the summer, and is a fun and refreshing place to take a dip without huge crowds. It is also the stone-skipping capital of Grey County! Jump off the pier, swim from shore, or hang out on the rocks and enjoy the view! Not suitable for weak or non-swimmers.

Of course! For more room on the beach and a bit more privacy, travel to the very north end of the beach and park there. If you want to be closer to all of the action, park somewhere between the 6th St Washrooms and the main beach at the "town site".

This sandy beach with a park and washrooms is very family friendly, although it has limited parking and gets more and more busy each year. There is a pier that is very popular for evening swims and watching the sunset. Close by is the Red Bay Lodge where you can enjoy a delicious meal indoors or on their outdoor deck area in the woods.

Beside the pier is a rocky beach area where you are a bit more sheltered from the waves of Georgian Bay for swimming. Be careful of the direction of the waves, though. Not suitable for weak or non-swimmers. Cold waters. The bottom is rocky, you may want water shoes. Close by are tennis courts and Bruce Trail access points!

Features a human-made sandy beach. The water is colder and clean, and great for a refreshing dip. Also enjoy the splashpad and playgrounds! Great for families. Watch for goose poop, broken glass, fishing lures (rare, but be aware of them). Wear water shoes.

Another local meat shop, Sullivan's sausages are known province-wide. They also serve ready-made frozen meals like meat pies and other frozen dishes. If you eat meat, this is a "highly recommend" from me. Take some frozen sausage home with you for your bar-b-que!

Burgers are very popular! These small business owners have tried REALLY hard to keep their business going in the pandemic with novel ideas and community contributions. They are keeping this favourite Bruce Peninsula destination open, and it is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. They deserve a little love! Dine in the cozy lodge, or outside on the deck in the woods (which can be a little buggy after dusk).

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but Josefina and her staff (her adult children!) do a great job of manis and pedis. For a feminine treat, why not?! The shop is air conditioned, and Josefina is Jamaican so the music in the shop is always fun!

If you are here for a longer visit, book ahead and get a massage at Complete Wellness. Rachel is my favourite (if you like a lot of pressure), but all of the massage therapists at this Spa do expert treatments. Be sure to reserve ahead to avoid disappointment - as soon as you book with me, you should book with them!

Fishing, Views

Along Bruce County Road 13 there is a pull-off area where there is a historic plaque and parking area. Here, you can fish from the old bridge for sunfish, bass, and sometimes pike. Try not to snag your line, though! Beaver also frequent the area, along with Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagles, Marsh Wren, American Bittern, several duck species, and sometimes swans! There are also turtles and frogs!

There is not much opportunity for shore fishing here, but if you have a small boat you can access this lake for fishing Bass, Pike, Sunfish, and possibly others. Large boats will not do well, there are too many weeds. Canoes or small motor boats are best. Please respect the private properties, farmland, and Conservation Authority properties surrounding the lake by only landing at the parking area. Take garbage out. There is a porta-pottie at the parking lot.
