Sightseeing

If you're into quirky history, this is a good place to start. Just a short walk from the house, this former prison has a very affordable tour that is well worth checking out. You can see why the prison was built the way it was, Al Capone's cell, and hear an audio tour narrated by Steve Buscemi. Definitely a good place to snap some cool pictures.

A must if you're in Philadelphia. This iconic bell is just that...a bell. But there is plenty to learn about the bell's significance inside the building in which it is housed. You can get close to the bell to grab some pictures or a bell selfie. It's free to enter but may be a long line over the weekends.

You too can have your Rocky moment by running up the Art Museum steps and celebrating at the top. You also get one of the best views of the city from the top of the steps. Don't forget to get your picture taken with the Rocky statue at the bottom of the steps as well.

An interactive science museum, the Franklin Institute would be a great place to bring the kids. Also fun for adults looking to learn a few things and play around with the science displays. Definitely check out which traveling exhibit is showing at the time.

Neighborhoods

Old city has all the historical areas of the city. Within it, you can find Independence Hall, The Constitution Center, and the Liberty Bell, among other things. There are also plenty of nice restaurants, bars, and parks in the areas as well. Be sure to spend some time in this area to get a feel of Philadelphia's older architecture and culture.

A hip neighborhood with many new establishments popping up. In this area you can find some fun places for a drink such as Frankford Hall and Philadelphia Distilling. This neighborhood can be a bit out of the way depending on where you are so you may need to plan to grab an Uber up there.

This is my personal favorite of walkable cheesesteak places. I would recommend this over Pat's and Geno's.

This is my favorite cheesesteak in the city. It's a bit far out so would require a drive but worth the visit for lunch in my own opinion. May not be feasible if you're pressed for time.

This place is definitely a must-see when visiting Philadelphia. It's an indoor food market with plenty of shops. You can get food, sweets, and assorted souvenirs inside. If you go in, the top places in my opinion are DiNic's Roast Pork and Herschel's East Side.

Honey's is one of my favorites for brunch. It is very common for there to be a line over the weekends. I would recommend getting their early. But it is worth the wait.

During the summer months, the Spruce Street Harbor Park is an awesome place to have a drink while lounging in a hammock. Relax under the colorfully lit trees in the park by the water. There are some decent choices for quick bites as well.

Fantastic Mexican food and great margaritas. Their goat cheese guacamole is a favorite as well. This one is in Midtown Village so if you're in that area, you should check El Vez out.

This is the beer garden you have to check out when in Philly. 1 Liter beers, outdoor fire pits, German food, and games. I frequent this place regularly as it never disappoints. Even when it’s cold out, they have a lot of heaters outside that can keep it decently comfortable. There is also an indoor area if you need it. Even though it’s a beer garden, I see a lot of families there with kids regularly so don’t feel as if the whole family can’t go.

Transporte

Public transit is not the best

There are two subways; one line bisecting the city going east to west, and one bisecting the city going north to south. If you have to go to any of the corners, you may still need to find another way of getting there like walking, Uber, or a bus. The north and south line does go directly to the stadiums though, so if you are going to a game, this would be a great way to get there.
Transporte

Use the subway to get to a game

The Broad Street line, going north to south, lets people off at the stadiums if you take it all the way to the most southern stop. This is much easier than trying to mess with the parking there.

The ol' "how do I order a cheesesteak" question

I get this question a lot. The typical phrase is "Whiz wit'." On a cheesesteak you will usually have three cheeses to choose from (American, Provolone, and Whiz). You can also opt for onion or no onions. So "whiz wit'" basically means you are asking for a cheesesteak with cheese whiz and with onions. Other combinations could be "American wit" or "Whiz wit'out."

Bring your passport to get into bars

Some bars are strict with following the state law that requires they check a passport when there is no US issued identification present. My wife is not from the US originally and we have run into that a few times where bars would not let her in because she did not have her passport on her. Just be ready with it in case they give you a hard time. Keep it safe when you're out though, of course.
