Drinks & Nightlife

This legendary Havana bar, one of many regularly frequented by papa Hemmingway, is classy and smart, presided over by waiters in natty red jackets. Proud of its reputation as the The Cradle of the Daiquiri, there is really only one drink to order here it would be remiss not to. The décor is plush and upscale and the room is dominated by the long central bar though there's further seating in the back. The mood is mature and sophisticated. Its appeal resides mainly in its literary heritage but if you want to cool off on a hot afternoon or prop up the bar in honour of the man himself, it's worth a visit. Serves a mean platter of sautéed shrimp as well, though it has to be said that the food is

Food Scene

Mango Habana is a small low-key restaurant located just behind the Capitolio near to Parque Central. For the style of mom and pop places this is pretty decent with clear transparent prices outside, a straightforward menu and friendly staff. This seems more authentic than some of the more up-market gourmet places yet avoid treating you like an idiot tourist paying through the nose for rubbish at other ‘authentic places’.The pizzas are huge and great value (3-5 CUC), and the fish, which we ate, was nicely presented and tasted good. Other dishes include your standard range of Cuban dishes and a good variety of meats simply prepared. They have a reasonable selection of drinks and a tasty flan fo

Arts & Culture

Spread over two campuses, the Bellas Artes is arguably the finest art gallery in the Caribbean. The 'Arte Cubano' building contains the most comprehensive collection of Cuban art in the world, while the 'Arte Universal' section is laid out in a grand eclectic palace overlooking Parque Central, with exterior flourishes that are just as impressive as the art within. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – Arte Cubano displays purely Cuban art and, if you're pressed for time, is the better of the duo. Works are displayed in chronological order starting on the 3rd floor and are surprisingly varied.
