Sightseeing

Gamle Bybro (The Old Town Bridge) provides a great view of the iconic colorful wooden buildings of Baklandet (Trondheims old town). The bridge was first built on this site in 1681. At the same time, Kristiansten Fort was under construction. A sentry and excise house stood at either end of the bridge. The excise house on the west side is still standing and is in use as a kindergarten. The bridge and gates as they now stand were built in 1861 by Carl Adolf Dahl, the municipal officer in charge of public buildings and works.

Right next to the apartment is Kristiansten Fortress, built after the great city fire in 1681 to protect the city. It towers above Trondheim city centre, and is one of the most popular recreational areas in town. The view from here is great! The fortress also houses a restaurant; great for brunch on those good weather days! The fortress never saw active battle, although during general Armfeldt’s siege of Trondheim in 1718 the mere existence of the fortress was sufficient to keep the Swedes from attacking. Whereas most of the bastions surrounding the city centre are no longer there today, Kristiansten with its outer defences has survived the passage of time and is currently the best preserved tower fortress in Norway – despite the order given by King Carl Johan in 1816 to the effect that the fortress was to be abandoned and left to the "ravishes of time".

Right next to Nidarosdomen is the Archbishop's Palace. The King’s crown and the other items that make up the Regalia of Norway are exhibited in the west wing of the Archbishop’s Palace. This priceless historical collection symbolises more than a millennium of the monarchy as Norway’s form of government. The King’s crown was acquired by King Charles III John for his coronation in 1818. The crown has since been used for four coronations and benedictions.
