A Brit and a Southie walked into a shuttered cafe and said, "This needs to be a pizzeria." Nine months later, some of the best pizzas and other tasty morsels started popping-out of the kitchen, and a local favorite was born. Awesome food, epic staff...a definite favorite, just a short stroll from the house.

The brainchild of Star Chef's Rising Star Chef of 2012, Quealy Watson - who catapulted Hot Joy onto the local scene as a successful pop-up at the now-shuttered Monterey, where he was previously chef - Hot Joy serves Watson's take on Asian food with a decidedly Texas twist. More importantly to Southies, however, is the fact that HJ also boasts the neighborhood's coolest bar decorated in the hippest style with the bestest views of the Alamo strip. So, while being named Bon Appetite's Best New Restaurant of 2014 is a really awesome thing, it really all comes down to the fact that Hot Joy, like all of Southtown, is just THE place to be.

Eccentric pizzeria serving some of the best sandwiches you'll ever eat and some of the most-eclectic brews you'll ever sip. Bi-located in a former gas station/garage, place your order out-back, where they lubed the engines, then step out-front to the former pump area to grab that brew and await culinary nirvana. Sometimes, the stars align and the perfect venue joins with the best concept to create a dining experience that is nonpareil. Such is the case with the latest iteration from the forces behind both Feast and Rebelle at the St Anthony Hotel. Housed in the old Fire Station No 7 and featuring 10 pastas for $10 each, including five fresh pastas, three dried pastas and two kinds of gnudi, Batallion completely changes the culinary landscape in San Antonio, putting the established eatery empires on notice that the norm is no longer the trend. From the expansive view of downtown to the digestivo cart, Battalion signals a new era in dining in the Alamo City.

Sometimes, ya just want a basic Mexican plate without all the frills and higher prices. For those instances, you definitely want to hit this place up. Las Tap serves-up really awesome and authentic Tex-Mex indoors and through their drive-thru window, and does it all with prices that will still allow you to take the kids to Sea World. Friendly staff, simple service and unpretentious surroundings make it an easy choice for a quick bite or a full meal, and the fact that a hefty percentage of the local population dines here means it's gotta be good.

One of the best-reviewed restaurants in Southtown happens to also be one of its newest. Fresca opened with little fanfare in October 2016, and its been garnering nothing but 5-star ratings since. Housed in a sixty year-old building that has been everything from an ice house to a Thai restaurant, it's a bar, it's a restaurant, it's a karaoke and Spurs-watching venue and it's even got live and recorded music. But, what draws them all in is its decadent menu that can only be described as indulgent. With items such as chocolate bacon - yes, chocolate bacon - barbacoa wontons, chicken and waffles and open-faced egg sandwiches, it's definitely not for the calorie-counters amongst us.

Bar America started off as Café America in 1942 and, through four significant changes to its location and operations, has managed to remain one of San Antonio's most-historic and -visited bars. The bar's current location was built over 80 years ago and is located a little over a half-mile away from the Alamo. Allegedly, spirits of the other-worldly variety mix with the more-expected type...but, that could just be the booze talking. Whatever the genesis of your apparitions or aperitif, enjoy your drink, follow the house rules, and leave your bigotry and disrespect at the door - or you may be asked not to return.

Years ago, when San Antonio was a backwater burg, lawyers and their ilk liked to get away from the stress and strain of negotiating cattle-rustling claims by grabbing a refreshing adult beverage with their clients and colleagues - and, the Esquire was more than happy to assist them. Dark and mysterious, like the cattle-rustlers, the Esquire was the perfect shadowy spot for secret negotiations, and its proximity to the San Antonio River perfect, in case those negotiations went awry. As one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States (the original cathedral was built between 1738 and 1750 and its walls form the sanctuary of today's structure,) the Church of Nuestra Sonora de la Candelaria y Guadalupe is both the seat of the Archbishop of San Antonio and an important cultural landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also in the heart of downtown, between Market Square (with its shops and, more importantly, the permanent Christmas light display, margaritas and renowned Tex-Mex fare of Mi Tierra's) and Big Red, the historic Bexar County Courthouse on Main Plaza. It's also just a block off the River Walk, so a pleasant and easy diversion.

When people think about San Antonio - and they do - they often think of the Alamo, the famed Spanish mission of film and fable that played such a huge part in both the city's and Texas' storied history. What they may not know is that the Alamo is just one of five significant padre palaces that dot the landscape from downtown to the far southern reaches of the city, all accessible simply by strolling or biking the River Walk. These outposts were established by Catholic religious orders to spread their beliefs to the locals, and have all been restored to near-perfection. Begin with the Alamo, then head south to Missions Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan Capistrano, and Espada.

The River Walk is a successful special-case pedestrian street, one level down from the automobile street. The River Walk winds and loops under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops, connecting the major tourist draws from the Shops at Rivercenter, to the Arneson River Theatre, to Marriage Island, to La Villita, to HemisFair Park, to the Tower Life Building, to the San Antonio Museum of Art, to the Pearl and the city's five Spanish colonial missions, which have been named a World Heritage Site, including the Alamo. Not bad for something that started-out as a drainage ditch.

In 2009, a new River Walk extension was completed and christened as the Museum Reach, a 1.33-mile stretch featuring San Antonio’s world-famous zoo; the Japanese Tea Gardens; Brackenridge Park; the historic, but funky Pearl District; and three very distinguished, but very different, museums – The Witte, The Doseum and The San Antonio Museum of Art - along its path. The Museum Reach is north of downtown, pedestrian-friendly, and a great way to explore and experience a variety of different activities for individuals and families of all ages. Don’t feel like walking? Hail one of our famous river taxis and see the city from an entirely different perspective.

Southtown is just south of downtown San Antonio, Texas, where three unique areas unite: The King William Historic District, where the house is located, Blue Star Arts Complex and Lavaca, San Antonio's oldest existing neighborhood. It's an incredible array of galleries and shops, restaurants and clubs, history and future-facing that has drawn an eclectic assortment of movers and shakers and doers and thinkers that make the art scene more artsy, the music scene more musical and the literary world more literal....So, go, be artsy, musical and literary - you'll be so glad you did!

Every city has one...the place that is recognized as the birthplace of the city. It's Allen's Landing in Houston, Olivera Street in LA...and, La Villita in San Antonio. In fact, it was one of SA's very first neighborhoods, long after it was first an American Indian settlement and, then, a collection of primitive brush huts for the Spanish soldiers stationed near the Alamo. Housing art galleries, shops and restaurants, La Villita connects to the San Antonio Riverwalk and its outdoor Arneson River Theater, and is close to the Alamo, the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, HemisFair Park and the historic King William neighborhood.

When we first came to San Antonio, shortly after Daniel Boone's coonskin cap was shot-off by Mexican soldiers, we assumed that the city's most-famous landmark would be out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by brush and tumbleweed and arrowhead fossils - just like in the John Wayne shoot-'em-ups. Instead, we found a relic next to a seen-its-glory-decades-ago hotel and a less-than fashionable department store named Joske's. Disa-dam-pointed. But, there's a McDonald's on the Champs Elysees and a KFC just a stone's throw from the Forbidden City, so we gave it a chance. Since, today, it's right by great restaurants and clubs and shopping, it's worth the trip!

Parks & Nature

Kids and adults alike will find San Antonio's HemisFair Park overflowing with fun activities and exciting adventures. A Magik Theater for kids, a playground built like a fortress, educational museums and the centerpiece - and, one of San Antonio's most-famous attractions - the Tower of the Americas - all set in a beautifully-landscaped surrounding, with large shade trees, flowering plants, cascading waterfalls and a surprise around every corner. HemisFair Park was built in 1968 to host that year's World's Fair and to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of San Antonio. Today, it is poised to become a grand, central greenspace, evocative of NY's Central Park.

Back in the day...like really waaaay back in the day, Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders - the ones that stormed San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War - drilled and rode and played war in the sylvan patch of land that lies about a mile south of the house. Being uber-patriotic, San Antonio's civic community turned it into a park and slapped Teddy's name on it. Today, a pool replaces much of the sylvan and picnic tables stand in place of the caissons, but it's definitely a park and Teddy would probably love all the big sticks....

Our friends, Antonia and Warren, have created a destination location that epitomizes everything that the arts community of Southtown is all about: a thriving arterial network of studios, learning spaces and galleries built to harvest and foster independent contemporary art. The space, a renovated factory, drums with the pulse of old San Antonio while stirring a sense of sophisticated modernity in everyone that moves through it. With a flexible layout, multiple artists enjoy the studio spaces at once, creating an epicenter of creativity and energy. And, that's what it's all about...creativity and energy!

There's TP and stuff, too but, truly, BSP is all about the boutique...a place ya go to pick-up some wax from Karma Candle Makers, some libations from the Blue Star Brewery and some aged cheeses from River Whey Creamery to impress your friends at the swell soiree you're heading to across town....not, really, the most economical or appropriate place if feeding the kids and packing their school lunches is on your mind. BUT, it is a beautiful space, the staff is pretty darned friendly - and, what they do stock will certainly make you feel all warm and snuggly on the inside....'cause, ya know, sometimes ya just gotta splurge!

South Flores Market is truly perfect - at least for we Southie-types that prefer coolers full of craft beers and fresh produce and organic/vegan staples to the mass-marketed and -produced dreck that tends to populate the shelves of HEB's bigger and busier suburban cousins. It's an intimate, user-friendly and easy-to-make-friends-with-all-the-pretty-people kinda place, and its patio with sensational views of downtown and wide variety of quick-bite and ready-to-eat meals make it as much of a dining destination as it is a southside supplier of stuff. We may disagree with their politics but, in this case, HEB done did good!
