Sightseeing the beaches

Dumfries&Galloway is bursting with sandy picturesque shores, this is one of the many attractions! I love D&G
Kippford is a village on the Solway coast, nr Dalbeattie, on the shore of the estuary of the river Urr, there’s a lovely 3 mile walk from Kippford to Rockcliffe. There’s a few shops and pubs, this is a stunning weee village. This is one of my favourite hidden gems in D&G, must walk down to the bottom of the village and see the cockle beach.

Rockcliffe is small, it’s a costal village in Kircudbrightshire, south of Dalbeattie, you can see Rough Island, Hestan Island, the Solway Firth, and on a clear day the Cumbrian Coast. It’s beautiful rugged appearance with sandy beach attracts walkers, it is a quiet bay! It is part of a national scenic area.

Powillimount Beach is located to the east of Southerness beach near Kirkbean on the Solway Coast and part of the Arbigland Estate. Views over the Solway Firth and on a clear day you can see the Lake District. It is a great beach to visit it is full of shells, rock pools and huge rock formations. There is one large stone in particular that looks like it does not belong. It is a huge granite boulder and legend has is that the devil took a bite out of Criffel and spat it out on the beach. Criffel is the large hill that overlooks Powillimount. The less fantastical version is that it was carried down to the beach by glaciers during the last ice age. I’ve copied/pasted that information as I can’t do this beautiful beach justice, go see it for yourself! You won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget your flip flops, costume, sarong and picnic!

The sandy Balcary Bay and Auchencairn Bay sit on a small coast, just over two miles long on the north side of the Solway Firth. The village of Auchencairn stands on the A711 coast road from Dalbeattie to Kirkcudbright. The photos don’t do this beautiful space justice, it really is stunning!
