Up for a scenic drive? Take the “back way” from our place at Whitmore Falls. From our driveway, go east on Whitmore Rd, about 4.5 miles, turn right on Ponderosa Way, (if you get to Fern Road, you’ve gone to far), stay on Ponderosa Way for about 15 miles (it’s a super winding road but it takes you to Hwy 44). Head East on Hwy 44 to Park entrance.
On the way to Lassen:
Stop at Higher Ground Coffee Shop, they have great sandwiches to enjoy there or take on a picnic: 28526 State Highway 44, Shingletown, California 96088 (if you take Ponderosa Way, turn right on Hwy 44.

An architectural place of interest is this church designed by the legendary architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. This mid-century modern facility is home to the Redding Pilgrim Congregation Church.
In 1958 Frank Lloyd Wright accepted the commission as architect for the new Redding Pilgrim church building. At the time he was working on the Guggenheim Museum in New York and remarked “Tell the people of the little church that I will help them out. If I like the ‘feel’ of the job, I‘ll take it.”

Walk Fern Road hill to see views of Mt Shasta, Mt Burney, and Mt Lassen. From our driveway, look for the wooden gate on the left, just before the gate. Follow the path to the metal gate. Turn left, walk for about ¼ mile, turn right on Fern Road. Walk up the modest hill and follow the tree lined street until the next curve (about 1 and ¼ miles from our place) Enjoy the views of the open country. Use caution as the occasional car and truck drivers travel at high speeds on Whitmore Rd.)

If you like to taste wine everywhere you go, try Wine Tasting at Moseley Family Cellars. Although they don’t grow any of the grapes nearby and the tasting room is not located in a lush vineyard setting, the wine is good, they usually feature a local artist work on the walls of the tasting room and if they’re aren’t too busy, they may offer a tour of the facility. The wine is tasty.
