1BR Nootka Rose Cottage is a charming mix of English and French country décor, with a few modern luxuries to make your visit to Washington State’s heartland a pleasure. Regional attractions are less than 2 hours each way -- wineries, ghost towns, rodeos, antique stores, beaches, high valley back roads. Or curl up with a cozy mystery and a cup of tea. Our late checkout lets you spend the whole weekend in the country. Not suitable for children or the physically challenged. No pets.
Nootka Rose is the middling of my Kokanee Cottages – a sweet one-bedroom Cape Cod. Its main room runs the length of the cottage, with what the English call a snug at one end (a cozy place to hang out by the electric fire and telly), a dining area at the other, and a huge sink-into-chintz couch in the middle. The snug is a great place to lounge and visit, marathon through all Laura Child's Teashop Mysteries, watch DVDs or Netflix on the HD Smart TV, or drool over Pinterest pix on your laptop. Serve tea from the silverplate set on the tea cart, or from one of the many china teapots. Choose from dozens (seriously) of bone china tea cups. Or sip champagne from paper-thin flutes. Straddling the center of the salon is a luxurious chintz couch -- lounge at your own risk, you’ll not be inclined to get up again. In fact, it’s a fine place for a second or third person to spend the night. The galley kitchen has most everything for baking and cooking except actual counter space (expand into the dining area if you’re rolling out pie or cookie dough). Brew a cappucino with the epressso machine, bake scones in the vintage range. The kitchen is also home to the stacked washer/dryer (good for small and medium loads). In the single bedroom, the lovely antique bed frame anchors a deep memory foam mattress and lots of pillows, cotton sheets, and quilts, for super sweet dreams. All the art in the cottage is from thrift stores; the lavish lighting from great deals on Ebay. The wee bathroom, redone from the joists up, ended up sleek and modern with lots of chrome -- and some crystal for extra charm. Nootka Rose Cottage is a delightful surprise hiding inside a house that looks just like the one every child draws. You’ll love to pamper yourself and pour a cuppa in this eclectic English/French country retreat.
Geralyne’s vacation home is located in Okanogan, Washington, United States. The City of Okanogan (the county seat but in all respects a small town) is centrally located in Okanogan Valley in north central Washington, putting you right in the middle of a great area to explore and enjoy. The city pool and Okanogan River are two blocks away; Salmon Creek even closer. The city also boasts a historical museum and farmers market. A nice grocery store is just two blocks north of the cottages.
The best fries on the planet are served at The Club tavern, within walking distance. (Their burgers and steaks are awesome, too.) The best breakfasts are at the Stockyard Cafe, a local haunt that is off the tourist track, and Smallwoods (2 miles south), where you can also buy organic produce and artisanal foods (they smoke their own meats in the summer, try their Porker). The Breadline Cafe 4 miles north in Omak, check out their Saturday brunch.
Also in Omak is Valley Lanes, if you're inclined to go bowling, and who wouldn't be? Beautiful Omak Lake is a mere 9 miles away, a hidden gem on the Colville Reservation and thus far totally undeveloped except for outhouses at the gorgeous beach nestled between granite cliffs that are mysteriously not crawling with climbers practicing for El Capitan. Balance Rock is 3 miles farther along the lake (a very short hike from the road), and if fishing is your thing, the lake is teeming with Lahontan cutthroat.
The north central area of Washington state is still a bit of a mystery for many coasties, so nip on over and see what they haven't discovered yet. Come over one spectacular mountain pass and go back over another. Regional attractions are all easy day trips by car -- no more than 2 hours each way. Double back or see more by making loop trips.
Visit Bavarian-style Leavenworth, the Old West town of Winthrop, or the ghost town of Molson. Enjoy the beaches of Chelan or Penticton, B.C. Admire back road mountain and desert scenery (don't miss Grand Coulee) or lush orchards and vineyards (Canada's top wine-growing region starts at the border, my favorite winery is Blasted Church just south of Penticton). Stop to look at wildlife and take photos of a million postcard views. Hike, hunt for antiques, fossils, gold; go swimming, boating, fishing. Taste the local produce in season, or eat out at wonderful restaurants, cafes, and pubs.
Rodeos add excitement in summer – the Omak Stampede with its famous Suicide Race is just 4 miles from the cottage! My favorite used/new bookstore (Daydream Books) is at the north end of town (the little house with the lions out front). It's a great area to do a great many things, or even better, maybe, do absolutely nothing.
