One of the best sunsets by the beach in town. Great swimming beach sheltered from the northerly winds

Enjoy great views and sunsets at this popular sheltered beach, 10minutes walk from The Studio. As part of the marine reserve the sea life can be amazing here, right in the shallows. The Blue Cod can get large and are very friendly, so watch your toes! Swimming is safer here than Houghton Bay, though…

A wild south coast beach that is a popular summer spot for its tucked away feeling. Rugged and moody but a great swim to boot.

Good for swimming when there are northerly winds. A nice little sheltered spot that gets late afternoon sun. Good for an afternoon picnic.

Route
“Walk around this rugged section of coastline to soak up wide open views and meet the local Seal population. Take food and drink with you - this is wilderness. 4WD vehicles can access this area Monday-Saturday. Sunday is foot and bike access only. Allow half a day. Sheltered in Northerly winds.”

“Beautiful park within a 5 minute walk from the flat. Lots of nature, and an awesome adult size play scape. Riding the zip-line is a must.”

“Inner city suburb with a great indie cinema - try the Salty Pidgin for a drink or meal first. Easiest to take an Uber or catch the number 7 bus that goes regularly from outside the ANZ - across the road from James Cook lift on Lambton Quay.”

Gastropub
“"The Brooky" is the local pub/sports bar. It has several big screens in the bar area for showing major sports matches (e.g. when the All Blacks are playing). There is a separate dining area with smaller tv screens - a bit quieter, but you can still watch sport. The à la carte menu features traditional kiwi fare such as prawn cocktail (an entrée) and mains like scotch fillet with mushroom sauce, fries and salad; and chiclen breast wrapped in bacon with a field mushroom and cream sauce. The kids really enjoyed their BBQ ribs. Most main meals were around $28 - $30, and were good sizes. Our steaks were perfectly cooked. For dessert, the waffle topped with Oreos, ice cream and cream went down very well, as did my traditional chocolate sundae. Overall we were very impressed with the food. There is also a pizza menu that we didn't try, but we've seen some of our guests bring pizza back here to eat, so that's clearly an option. The drinks list is adequate, with reasonable variety. The only area in which The Brooky lets itself down a bit is service. The waitstaff are based behind the main bar, and serve bar patrons first. While our waitperson was very nice and accommodating, we didn't see much of her. It was faster to get up and go to the bar to get more drinks than wait for someone to come to the table. Our mains dishes were never cleared so we also went to the bar to order our desserts. As long as you know to expect this, and you're happy to get up and go to the bar when you need something, you will enjoy your night out at The Brooky.”

“Site of the Wahine tragedy (boat sinking) of 1968 in which 51 people lost their lives. Peaceful spot to sit and watch the ocean while contemplating the world.”
