The symbol of Dubrovniks survival and freedom, the fort was used for the defence of the city and the western Pile gate. Above the entrance to the fort is the famed inscription: NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO (Freedom is not sold for all gold in the world). The first official records mention the fort in 1301, although it is believed that its construction began earlier. Today Lovrjenac is well-known as one of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival open-air venues particularly suitable for works by William Shakespeare.

Built upon a 37 meter high sheer rock overlooking the sea, fortress Lovrijenac is one of the most impressive locations in Dubrovnik. Buying ticket for city walls will get you free entrance here !

A lot of visitors miss the oportunity to go to the Lovrjenac fortress. In the ticket for the Walls, a visit to this fortress is included so don't miss out, the view is amazing.

Fort Lovrjenac, also known as the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik, is a fortress located on a cliff outside the outer walls on the west side of Dubrovnik, 37 meters above the sea level. The fort is known for the performances and weddings that take place in this monumental building and most importantly as a historical symbol of resistance to the Venetian Republic. Great to see!

Built upon a 37 meter high sheer rock overlooking the sea, fortress Lovrijenac is one of the most impressive locations in Dubrovnik. See the copy of the largest cannon “Gušter” (the Lizard) that is lost at the bottom of the sea below the Fort.
