Unveiled in 2015 as part of South Bend’s 150th birthday celebrations, the South Bend River Lights are a fixture of the downtown landscape. Vibrant color washes over the St. Joseph River, highlighting the “Keepers of the Fire” statue and the water as it rushes downriver. The River Lights are also interactive. Sensors built into the light pillars detect motion. They change color or their pattern when people walk by. Simply put, there’s no other attraction like it, and they’re totally free to experience.

This is a unique year round art exhibit you can walk through on the river in South Bend. Starting at Sunset interactive light displays are turned on along the river walk. Best places to view are Seitz Park, Colfax Bridge, Island Park, and Pier Park. 24 hour access is available to Island Park except during private events. Parking: Downtown parking is free during evenings after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends. The best available parking to access the River Lights is along Niles Ave., Colfax Ave., Century Center and Seitz Park.

These lights operate 365 nights/year and are best seen from The Colfax Bridge, Island Park and Pier Park. Built-in sensors prompt the lights to change colors, and you can use them to send a flow of colored lights across the river while people on the other side send a flow of color back.
