The Golden Lion is both a local community pub and an internationally renowned small live music venue. They also do their own Thai food as Gig the landlady is Thai herself.

Very lively and interesting pub venue that always has something going on. It has an 'alternative' vibe so you may not be to your taste but friendly with good beer and different menus available each (early) evening.

This a proper pub, not a bar, and one of my favourites too. Great place, good food nd selection of drinks. Top atmosphere and very welcoming.

“Now this is a little unusual! Gaddings Dam is famous for being the highest beach in the British Isle. It’s used on a regular basis for deck chairs and swimming. I kid you not! Buckets and spades not compulsory! It’s worth a visit, just to send a photo of you relaxing on the beach to friends and family. Again it only a stones throw away from the Shepherds Rest if you know what I mean!”

“Hardcastle Crags is a wooded Pennine valley owned by the National Trust. A beauty spot of the South Pennines with more than 160 hectares (400 acres) of unspoilt woodland. As well as being the home of the northern hairy wood ant, there are tumbling streams, glorious waterfalls and stacks of millstone grit, all crisscrossed by more than 15 miles (24km) of footpaths. At its heart is Gibson Mill, a family-oriented visitor centre (and café), telling the history of the valley over the past 200 years, with interactive displays, dressing up, dancing and exhibitions. Having no link to the national grid, the mill is unique in the UK and is the Trust's flagship sustainable building. ”
