Food Scene

Some of the Mexican food you'll ever eat. Lines can be long but you can call ahead to order. It's in the Variety Store parking lot so hard to miss.

One of my favorite restaurants on the island. Amazing mix of seafood and New Orleans style cooking in a beautiful new building. Great bar and wine selection.

Don't miss a cup of coffee or tea and a treat at the Magic Bean. Awesome place to hang out, work, meet new folks, just chill.

SMacs has (at least) two things going for it: the best burger on the island and the best view.

Arts & Culture

Marcy and Lou have really created something special here, right on Silver Lake harbor. Friday night shows with island native Martin Garrish are a particular treat.

OPS will give you a terrific introduction to the island. Don't be fooled by the cozy rooms; they are jam-full of history and culture.

Shopping

More than books, Books to Be Red also has pottery, gifts, jewelry and kids stuff. The book selection is vast and deep. Leslie, the store owner, is one of my favorite people on Ocracoke.

Parks & Nature

Most of Ocracoke is part of the National Seashore, which is why you won't see any development. Try a different beach each day, starting with Airport Beach (the closest one out of town) and then Lifeguard, the Ocracoke Camp Ground and on up to the Pony Pen beach.

Essentials

My motto for the Variety Store is, if they don't have it, you probably don't need it. You'll pay a bit more for things than on the mainland. The selection is quite good for a smallish store. Next door you'll find the hardware store and then the ABC store.
