Shackleford Banks is a barrier island system on the coast of Carteret County, North Carolina. It contains a herd of feral horses, scallops, crabs and various sea animals, including summer nesting by loggerhead turtles.

Emerald Isle Woods is a 40 acre preserve that provides birding opportunities on the south shore of Bogue Sound. More than 2 miles of trails and a floating dock, take the kayaks.
Numerous walking trails and a beautiful view of the sound for you and your dog.
Emerald Isle Woods Trail is a 0.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Emerald Isle, NC that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and trail running and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Smith Watercraft Center teaches boatbuilding for all ages.
