Food Scene

Probably the closest restaurant to the condo. You can walk on the Parkway Trail all the way to Zax. Go to west end of Williams Way, follow path to the left (or south) where it will turn into the Millcreek Parkway Trail. Zax has good, reasonable food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We love the salad bar! They also sell pizza slices to go. Nice rooftop seating!

Parks & Nature

ROCK ART: I am a little obsessed. There are literally thousands of ancient images around Moab to ponder. The VIsitor Center has a brochure which highlights some of the main sites, but there are too many to list! Please practice proper etiquette and never touch rock art not carve into rocks or natural features.
One of the best hiking trails around Moab...stays near a creek most of the hike. If you have dogs with you, beware...there IS POISON OAK along the stream! Stay to the left when the trail forks...you will end up at beautiful Morning Glory Arch! Head north out of Moab. turn right on the road next (south side, right before) to the river. Drive a few miles to the trailhead. It has been known as Negro Bill Canyon, but the agencies overseeing it have changed name to Grandstaff Canyon. It is a well-used trail, it will be the first large parking lot to your right after turning onto the River Rd.

This road dead ends at a parking lot and trail head. Lovely swimming holes adjacent to parking lot...GREAT on a hot day! The most popular and larger swimming hole is up canyon...stay to left side when trail forks. There are also nice pools very close to the parking lot. You will need to cross the stream a few times, so wear shoes that can get wet. Wonderful petroglyph panels along the way, and beautiful scenery! To reach the canyon above the main pool, you will need to backtrack a short distance and look for the trail on the left, or north side of the stream which will allow you to get above the main pool and continue up canyon. DO NOT go near the water when it's raining or threatening rain! Flash floods can come roaring down canyon without warning. WATCH OUT for poison ivy along stream!

This is a good place to start a scenic tour...head up river (east). Shortly after turning on this road, there will be a pull-out with room for a few cars on the right hand side. This is MATRIMONY SPRINGS, and an excellent place to fill up your water bottles! Locals use this water source all the time. Road will follow along the Colorado River. You will eventually end up on I-70 if you go far enough! Fantastic views of the La Sal Mountain, Fisher Towers, and the Historic Dewey Bridge. This is a famous stretch of river to raft day trips. I LOVE to drive this stretch of road during rain storms and watch all the waterfalls cascading off the surrounding cliffs! Stop at Red Cliffs Lodge for lunch, dinner or drinks on their lovely patio near the river. They have a wonderful Movie Museum there!

One of the best short hikes in the Moab area, with one of the greatest rewards! Approx. 1 1/2 miles to this incredibly gorgeous arch, famous for the Corona Arch Rope Swing (no longer allowed!). Look it up on YouTube! This is mostly a gentle hike on slick rock, but a few places to scramble, and a short ladder to ascend a sandstone ridge to get closer to the arch. Beautiful, quiet, scenic! Head north on 191 towards Arches National Park. After crossing the bridge, look for the signs pointing to the Potash Rd (will be a left turn) which is on the northwest side of the Colorado river. Drive down this gorgeous road to the Corona Arch Trailhead. Follow the trail and cairns to the arch! This is on BLM land, not National Park land, so dogs on leash are allowed.

Incredible Native American pictographs and petroglyphs. The ghost town of Sego in also in this canyon...ruins of houses, cellars and old cars. Cemetery. Fun to poke around! Well-graded dirt road into the canyon...Head north out of Moab on HWY 191...turn east on I-70, get off at the Thompson exit which is perhaps 10-15 miles east of Crescent Junction? Head north through the town of Thompson. This road turns to dirt eventually. The road splits, but you can explore both sides. There is a well-marked trailhead with information on the rock art panels...some of the best around! The ghost town and old cemetery is easy to find and just off of one of the roads. Watch for RATTLESNAKES, and please stay off of private property!!!
