We highly recommend this be on your MUST SEE list while in Juneau. Wonderful art exhibits and Alaska's Historical Collections and Library are located in a new beautifully designed iconic building in downtown Juneau. Also rich in Alaska Native history and artifacts, including original housposts from the village of Kake. There is also a gift shop and small cafe.

Take the tram from the docks up a very steep incline to the top of Mt Roberts. On clear day, you have a 360 degree view from the top. An excellent short film "Seeing Daylight" can be viewed in the small theater. Hiking trails jump off from the visitor area and take you further up the mountain with stunning, breathtaking views! The tramway is owned and run by a native corporation. There are carvers and the opportunity to purchase native artwork in the gift shop. There are trails that will get you there too, without taking the tram.

Sealaska is a Native Corporation representing the Native People of Southeast Alaska, including Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian. A room in the Heritage Institute is modeled after a clan house with beautiful carvings and a glass screen representing a Chilkat Woven Blanket. A very nice gift shop is attached to the building on Main Street and Seward.

This is where the seat of Alaska's Government is located, not a totally impressive state capitol, but tours are offered where the state legislators convene every year. The Diamond Courthouse and Governors house is also nearby.

This is probably the most visited place in Juneau and a 'Must See'. The Mendenhall Glacier is our glacier and easily accessible to visitors to anyone who wants to see it. There are easy trails to a lookout, to Nugget Falls and also an ecology walk where one can see black bears foraging during certain times of the year (when salmon are spawning. We also recommend a visit to the National Park Service visitor center, where one can learn about evolution of this particular glacier and the icefields that feed the glaciers, as well as get a spectacular view of the glacier.

On Douglas Island, beautiful Sandy Beach and historic Treadwell Ditch trail, a little walking trail takes you through the ruins of more recent history, during the gold rush when gold was processed. The mine collapsed and what remains are ruins covered by forest growth; a wonderful walk through history.

You will need a car to get here, but well worth the visit. Nestled in nature, one can walk to the small island where a little stone church is located along with stations of the cross. There is a beautiful walk to a grotto housing the Pieta. You might spot a humpback whale, seals or sea lions or any number of wildlife from here.

Gifted to the City of Juneau, this peaceful waterfront arboretum has a wonderful varied collection of flowering plants, and for primrose lovers, many varieties of primrose. You will need a car to travel here, and you won't be able to get into the cabin, but its all about location and views, close to Amalga Harbor. Take a little trail to, and past the Gruening cabin and you will end up at a little picnic place and trails that take you to a saltwater chuck and to the shore where you can look at the Chilkat Mountains and see teeming wildlife, including Eagles, Ravens, Merganzer Ducks, whales, eagles, seals and sea lions, and maybe even a foraging black bear.

When you go exploring....

Please be prepared for weather. . .we are in a maritime rainforest, and weather can change quickly. Its also colder at the glacier. . . Be sure to always pack rain gear, or at least something with a hood (we generally don't use umbrellas because of the wind), wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes if you are planning to go on a trail. Its always wise to take water and an energy snack!!! Please note food/drink is not allowed at the glacier because of the prevalence of bears.
