Food Scene

It is the kind of place you order at the counter and then take your food to the park. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also sell beer and wine. The wine selection is internationally diverse, and the beer selection is regional and international craft brews.

Bonobo Pizza burns exclusively oak in their wood ovens. Andy and I regularly argue regarding the best pizza in town. Bonobo is his favorite. If you like a wood fired, thin/crispy crust, this is your place.

Traditional and Improvisational dumpling house housed in a historic drug store storefront. The dumplings, both regional and traditional, are technically perfect. The casual, comfortable dining experience mixes the traditional dumpling house with a more refined dining experience. Many locals stop here after work for cocktail and enjoy a dumpling such as the - Tofu, Shiitake, Carrot & Cilantro, yum.

If you are looking for a less expensive, quicker meal, so you can get on the road, or a lobster boat, this is your place. This formerly all night, family owned and operated diner opens at 4am and feeds many of the areas lobster fishermen and dock workers. The easiest way to Beckys is to walk down, under the bridge through Harborview Park, make a left onto commercial street and after about 400 feet Beckys is across the street.

It is a very easy walk to this little craft beer tap room in the heart of the Arts District. 15 taps, mostly local, always rotating. The food is simply prepared, locally farmed dishes when seasonally possible. Everything about this space is comfortable. The decor is Maine rustic, the patrons are mostly neighborhood locals, and the service is attentive without ever feeling rushed. It may not be the first place I recommend to our guests, but if you are looking for casual, comfortable, and simple wholesome preparation. This is your place.

The european eclectic gastro pub menu includes sizable entrees and plenty of shareable small plates. Recently with friends we split calamari tacos, a charcuterie board, Watermelon salad, and a Hen of the woods bruschetta. Yum.

"The best southern food not in the south", according to Bon Appetit magazine. Dollar oysters at 4 pm happy hour. The Bloody Mary here is cajun spicy and topped with a pickled dilly bean and ocara. BREAKFAST every day until 2pm. This is a locals favorite for brunch. Don’t expect a fancy dining room, it's southern, it's brunch, its cheap, its great service.

Very popular, very eclectic, very comfortable, very colorful, local favorite. The food (not the service) really sells this place. It is a genuinely excellent culinary experience that will not disappoint. It is also not a place to go if you are in a hurry. Reserve time for your meal, as it will take time. You might occasionally find your cocktail empty. However this is one of the original establishments that ignited Portland’s culinary explosion. They don’t rest on their laurels, they reinvent.

Figgy’s Takeout is all about comfort food. Menu Online. They recreate the meals you grew up eating. No Eat in Space. Budget friendly while still using local ingredients. Andy and I often take out here and head to ferry beach in Scarborough for a picnic on warm summer nights.

Make a right out of the driveway and walk until you reach Rosemont Market at Pine Street about 1000 feet. Make a left onto Pine Street and walk about 75 feet you will be at Chaval. Featuring a modern Spanish menu respectful of Spain’s classic tapas traditions, this is the perfect place to sit and savor. Entree style dining is delicious here and includes options as curious as the quail cordon bleu and as simple as steak frites. However rather then go straight in for the kill consider sharing the extensive options on the “Snacks” and “caught in the middle” menus, which are generally designed for two people. If you enjoy engaging servers and bartenders and learning about food and drink provenance the staff will not disappoint. On a recent visit Patrick explained the Jamon Iberico de Bellota I was enjoying has a pronounced marbling of fat as the pig is fed an all acorn diet prior to harvest. The food evokes memories of eating on Las Rumblas in Barcelona without the street performers. The drinking here will make you happy. Getting home takes only 8 or nine minutes on foot. This is in my top five favorite eateries in Portland. It is reported to have an excellent sunday brunch.

Essentials

Do not judge this book by the cover, I already judge it enough for both of us. Yes the cover is rough, and it isn’t any better inside. However, this micro grocery store has just about everything you need to make a simple dinner. More importantly the butcher is very affordable as they also supply many of the restuarants in the city. Nothing here is organic.

Local organic micro grocer open 9 am to 8pm, with four Portland locations and deliveries to the islands in Casco Bay. This location hosts a butcher, a cheesemonger and excellent produce. They sell craft beer, wine, and many prepared foods. Often they have meals to take home.

This is the closest gas station. ATM inside. Red Box outside. It feels like a marginally sketchy neighborhood convenience store, because it is a marginally sketchy neighborhood convenience store. But this is also a good time to mention that Maine has the lowest violent crime rate of 50 US states. It makes for a fun sketchy, not a scary sketchy.

Parks & Nature

This unique 2.4 acre park masterfully integrates a manicured esplanade between two significant design challenges, a culminating bridge approach and a sprawling deepwater marine terminal. I find the confrontation of edifice and nature profoundly soothing. The park is safely enjoyed day or night however you may occasionally at night find people smoking weed and loitering under the bridge.
