Food Scene

This restaurant is in Lagarde d'Apt up in the Monts de Vaucluse: a fantastic drive up through territory that was actively used and protected by the Résistance during WWII. An innovative, seasonal and colourful cuisine served in quite generous proportions in a relaxed and informal way. Weekday lunchtimes are best value but for a Michelin starred restaurant the prices remain realistic. Booking recommended.

Just a 15 minute but stunning drive from Apt in the heart of the Luberon near the village of Buoux, an area renowned worldwide for the rock climbing , nestling in breathtaking scenery. Close to the little Aiguebrun river, a spectacular limestone cliff overhangs the restaurant protecting it from the Mistral. Open everyday from 1st March to 15th November serving fresh local produce, including home-raised trout and Luberon lamb, lovingly transformed into simple but copious Provençale, family fare. Although residents have recently become divided by the arrival of a new Seigneur in the form of Pierre Cardin and his purchase of the Marquis de Sade's château for one "symbolic" franc, Lacoste is finally "on the map" and coach tours now make stops here just as in Gordes, Bonnieux or Roussillon. It is a beautiful village: some buildings have had their archaeological architecture and history ripped out of them by Cardin and some are well preserved and respected by Lacoste's other major occupant, the US art school, SCAD. The local stone quarries, some of which are still extracting the white pierre d'Estaillade, provided the materials necessary for building Apta Julia, the Roman city of Apt and Caballio, now Cavaillon. Stop at the Café de France and drink in the view over Bonnieux and the Luberon or make the walk up to the château at the top of the village for a peek at the medieval buildings and cobbled streets and more spectacular, panoramic views.

Can be extremely crowded and touristy especially at weekends and in summer. You now have to pay to visit the ochre cliffs but the route is secured. A charming village with many cafés and boutiques.

With its Renaissance château and permanent exhibition of Vasarély, this village is worth a visit even if it gets very crowded and touristy in summer. The views over the valley are stunning.

Parks & Nature

The manmade lake near the industrial zone is a tranquil spot on the edge of town. Ideal for a walk or a run, fishing or sailing, unfortunately bathing is not allowed here. Soon there will be watergames available for children and the whole family. There is a restaurant close to the water's edge. There are also 2 zones for skateboarding, one of which is in the old swimming pool by the restaurant and a children's recreation area.

For a change of scenery visit this forest planted in 1860 by a committed forester convinced of the economics behind this exploitation of wood for building. Since then, it has become an extensive and mature forest: the undergrowth offers rare local conditions for the fauna, flora and other visitors. You can hear a blackbird, great tits, the surprise leaping of a red squirrel or you may come across some herds of wild boar or discover more than 350 species of fungi. This ecosystem is explained along the nature trail which is an easy walk for families. A picnic in the shade of the cedar forest with a backdrop of the Provencal village of Bonnieux, the Monts de Vaucluse and Mont Ventoux reward this walk.

A manmade reservoir of water for irrigation of the Aigues (Aix) Valley dating from the 15th century which is open all year round for bathing with lifeguards from July 1st to 31st August on the main West beach opposite the campsite. A beautiful, natural and tranquil spot with turquoise waters without the glitzy glamour of the French Riviera!

It has to be seen. Go to Saintes Maries de la Mer for a touristy, seaside feel, catch a couple of gipsy guitarists in a café restaurant at lunchtime. Go horseriding to see the wilder side of the area, bulls and gardians included. Visit the ornithological park. If you prefer a quieter time of it, take a picnic and go to Les Salins de Giraud, Piemanson plage, park and find somewhere you like along the 25km of beach. For kitesurfing, go to Beauduc - only accessible to cars, no camping vehicles, via a very bumpy dirt track.
