The Arizona Snowbowl is great for skiing and snowboarding during the winter, and the road leading up is just 1.5 miles from us. You'll get to avoid traffic, as it is coming from the other direction. During the rest of the year, the Snowbowl offers a scenic chairlift ride. There are also numerous hiking/biking trails located on the mountain.

Friends and family have all reported that Flagstaff Extreme is a fun way to spend the day! It's about 14 miles from our house, and it will take around 30 minutes to drive to their location. Flagstaff Extreme offers both zip lines and adventure courses. It has five levels, as well as a kid's course, with a place to come down between each one. If you lose your nerve partway through, the staff will help you down at any point in the course. They have a mandatory training session before, as well as double clip system, that ensures that a fun day in the trees is safe for everyone. Beware that this is a rain or shine activity, and they generally don't refund due to weather. Flagstaffextreme.com

Located just 15 minutes from our home, the Pioneer Museum in Flagstaff is located in the historic Coconino County Hospital for the Indigent. The Hospital was built in 1908 using pumiceous dacite from an explosive eruption of Mount Elden about 500,000 years ago. The building was used as a hospital until 1938. The land surrounding the hospital was previously the county “Poor Farm.” The exhibits within the museum reflect the history of Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. Visitors will learn of the local history of ranching, logging, transportation and life in pioneer Flagstaff.

The Riordan Mansion is a historical site in Flagstaff, and is especially fun to tour over the holidays when it is decorated for the season. Built in 1904 for two Riordan families, it is a remarkable example of Arts and Crafts style architecture featuring a rustic exterior of log-slab siding, volcanic stone arches, and hand-split wooden shingles. The Riordan residence was designed by the creator of Grand Canyon's El Tovar Hotel, Charles Whittlesey.

Easily combined with a visit to Sunset Crater, Wupatki has an excellent visitor's center and many ancient ruins. It is located 53 miles from our home. Here's one review: "Located near painted dessert, which is amazing in itself, Wupatki is a must see if you're in the area. Building are made from red sandstone blocks and the walls are still mostly intact. The landscape appears to be totally uninhabitable so it is hard to believe that the ancient people were able to grow corn and squash... Even more amazing was the distance of the trade routes. Items from both the pacific and gulf coast have been unearthed here..."

Antelope Canyon is one of the most photographed slot canyons in the American Southwest because of the beautiful colors of the twisted and sculpted rock formations. There are two locations, the upper and lower canyons. The upper is better for those not able to traverse stairs. Reservations are highly recommended and often are NOT available on the same day. Antelope Canyon is on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona, and you must take a tour. Walking around on your own is not allowed. It is located 140 miles from our home, and will take at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours to drive. http://www.antelopecanyon.com/ http://lowerantelope.com/general-tour/

This is one of my favorite trails in the immediate area around our home. There was a fire in the area in 2017, but it didn't diminish much of the beauty surrounding the trail. It's rated moderate in difficulty, but if you aren't used to the high elevation, it will seem harder. The steep trail is 9.5 miles up and back, with 2680 feet in elevation gain. I do recommend taking at least one hiking pole, as snow and ice can stick around at the top well into the warm months, making some of the switchbacks slippery. Wear good shoes, sunscreen & take plenty of water. https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino/recarea/?recid=75208 https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/kendrick-mountain-southside

Humphreys Peak is the highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet & one of the most scenic viewpoints in the San Francisco Peaks. This 9.2 mile trail is rated hard and is only for experienced hikers. The drive to the trailhead from our home is only 20 minutes up Snow Bowl Road. Pack warm clothing (jacket, hat, scarf, gloves) for the summit, as it can be quite cold at the top, even when it's warm at the trailhead. In fact, it's not unusual for snow to be at the top well into summer. It is not advised to attempt this hike during monsoon season, when lightning strikes are a regular occurrence. Hikers have been killed by lightning along this trail.

The Arboretum at Flagstaff specializes in plants native to the Colorado Plateau and northern Arizona. Desert View Drive is a scenic route to the east of Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim which follows the rim for 25 miles (40 km) out to the Desert View Watchtower and East Entrance. Following the route, you can stop at various viewpoints along the way, and the Tusayan Ruin and museum. As you continue on Hwy 64 you will arrive at the Cameron Trading Post, which has a huge souvenir shop and restaurant with a beautiful, rustic dining room. It's worth getting a meal there if you have time. I'm partial to the Navajo Taco, which is served on fry bread. From there, you catch Hwy 89 to loop to Flagstaff. Also known as Havasupai Falls, the turquoise water and red rock surroundings of these four separate waterfalls are spectacular. While definitely in Northern Arizona, Havasu Falls are not near Flagstaff. The trailhead is at Hualapai Hilltop, Supai, AZ 86435, a 3-4 hour drive from our home. If you want to go, there are a few things to know. First, to get to the Falls, you either have to hike or take a helicopter. The hike is strenuous and HOT during the summer. Do your research. There is also a smaller location downtown, which would be fun if you are walking the downtown area. It can sometimes be difficult finding parking close by, and many roads have metered parking. If you want information, just ask! This location is about 20 minutes from our home.
Neighbors rejoiced when we found out that a Fratelli Pizza location was moving in 10 minutes from us on Hwy 180. This is a favorite pizza place in Flagstaff. They have great pizza, including a gluten-free option, wings, and other menu items are available. They have a nice outdoor patio as well as indoor seating. Unfortunately, they don't deliver. 928-440-5441 http://www.fratellipizza.net/

Pita Jungle has a large dining room, plus some patio space on two sides of the building. They offer a nice selection of Greek food, salads, and gourmet pizza. It is a chain that started in Arizona, so all but one of their restaurants is in AZ. It can be loud when it is busy, but the food is always delicious. For a great deal, check out happy hour menu from 3-6pm and 9-9:30pm daily. http://www.pitajungle.com/locations/flagstaff

I happen to love Mongolian Grills, and this one has a great selection of ingredients. I generally try to just go to locally owned (Flagstaff or at least an Arizona chain) places, but this is good and it's the only Mongolian Grill in town.

This place seems like a little hole-in-the-wall, and finding it is not obvious. The parking situation is awkward, but the food is fantastic. Fresh ingredients and creative dishes make this a wonderful spot for lunch. They also have a little patio that is lovely during good weather. I would recommend parking in the lot just off of Elden Road; don't try to access their tiny lot beyond the cafe. There isn't much room to turn around if the spaces are taken. You can also park along one of the streets and walk up to the cafe. (928) 774-2855 https://simplydeliciousflagstaff.com

Tourists and locals alike enjoy Black Barts, as much for the musical revue as the food. Chances are that your server will also be one of the singers who perform standards and show tunes throughout the evening.
