Food Scene

Some of the most exciting food I have had. Always something new on the menu and the staff are simply the best. They love what they are doing and it is service with a capital 'S'. Not overly cheap but worth the experience. Booking is nearly always essential to avoid disappointment.

Nestled at the end of the local 'strip shopping centre' of Stockbridge is the Raeburn Hotel. A magnificently restored Georgian building which now has some 5 star offerings. Some fine dining available and an extensive wine bar area which serves counter meals all day. Also available for receptions and has a few guest rooms. a couple of lovely outdoor area's to the front and also on a balcony which overlooks the rugby playing fields next door. Again, it may not be the cheapest but has a great following and always worth dropping in for a quick libation.

Drinks & Nightlife

A really cozy and warm wine bar serving light but somewhat substantial bar snacks, hot & cold. Great wine selection and staff really know their wines to a high standard. Not tried a wine, want to improve your understanding of wine, then these guys will help. They always have time to chat about wines, vineyards and food. Fantastic warm and inviting place for a chat, no seat available no entry though. Quiet background music.

Real Ales and whiskey. What a range of whiskey........ Brilliant staff when they are not flat out serving the throngs from time to time. Best to get an off hours visit in on a chilly day when the fire is on in the front bar. Authentic we decor which I am sure hasn't change in the 30 years I have been visiting. Great for a hearty budget conscience lunch or post footy winter-warm meal of mince and tatties, baked potato with assets fillings are also one of my favourites. Some reasonable quality wines by the glass, but really it is all about real Ales and Whiskey, don't count your change when it comes to the drinks prices. It is a 'Must Do' place to visit in Edinburgh. Tell them Eric sent you!!

Hamiltons bar & kitchen is a really busy place from Thursday eve through to Saturday eve. It is where all the young and happening go to meet up before their night out. Some really great food, wine list can vary from great to....well not so great. It is quite loud when in full swing, but plenty of music and throngs of partying folk. They also have a mighty good cocktail menu if that floats your boat. Breakfast (10am onwards) is good value and usually well busy on the weekends so perfect for a lazy Sunday breakfast with friends and family. Live music on Sunday afternoon/early evening.

Well, it has been some time since I have frequented this bar due to the large and overwhelming arrival of new venues in Stockbridge. In its 'hay-day' however it is fair to say that it attracted all of the 'hip & happening' folk of Edinburgh. Well worth a try with great window seats offering a vista of the endless stream of pedestrian life passing by.

A must do after a hectic week of walking the sights and sounds of Edinburgh. Massages are particularly wonderful and when coupled with a float, it takes a while to find your feet again. Recommend undoing all of that relaxation with a coffee and either Nero's or Starbucks.

Need a sauna, swim or workout. Day passes available to this venue are worth a visit simply for the restoration work carried out on the building. Simply a unique trip into history. Brilliant for the family. Ring first as they run children and women only times that can limit access to all facilities. Just another wee secret place which is off the beaten track. Good parking available just inside the gate, for those on public transport a bus to Davidson Mains shopping centre will get you to within a 10-15 min walk of the Castle. (Just ask for directions) The Japanese Gardens were planted as a symbol of Japanese Scottish unity and while not enormous offer a brilliantly quiet and prominent setting where one can sit and look out across the Forth and fall in love all over again. The general grounds to the Castle also provide an extensive walk and some lovely vista's. Well worth the effort.

Well not really a shopping mall as opposed to the good old high street 'strip shops'. Shops, shops, shops and more shops. Ideal for retail therapy. Includes the likes of: Apple store, Levi's Jewellery assets, general clothing, food, wine, coffee, music, telecoms, bank cash points, McDonalds and much more. Running parallel to George Street which offers a lot of fashionable branded stores and restaurants. The East end of town has the definitive upmarket 'Harvey Nichols' and Louis Vuitton Next to Havery Nic's. At the East end of town, you can find many ladies clothing and designer boutiques. Views, views and more views of skylines around Edinburgh. Now these are deceptively somewhat steep mounds of rock and dirt, so be prepared with some drinking water and some light snacks for those not of a strong walking disposition. The rewards at the top however are breathtakingly refreshing. There is a public car park about halfway up. The road around this area is closed on Sundays for walkers.

A brilliant place to go just now (Dec 2016) to observe the last remaining parts to the construction of the new bridge being built across the Forth. A magnificent structure right in the heart of Edinburgh situated within the parkland surrounding the Castle. For a small fee you can actually climb the interior access stairs to a few sightseeing levels for some brilliant views of down-town Edinburgh city centre. I would not recommend this stair climb for larger framed folk as it is quite narrow in places. Wasn't exactly built with tourism in mind!

A really thriving and dynamic street in Edinburgh, particularly during summer and the Edinburgh Festival in August. By day, a great place to sit in the sunshine (when it is here) and while away some lazy time people watching, plenty of food and drink venues line this area. Castle views. Victoria Street winds its way down to the Grassmarket and is also full of brilliant food, drink and assets shops for clothing, gifts, memorabilia. Well worth a few hours out of your day. By night, this place transforms into something of a haven for the young bar scene, I wouldn't recommend it as a sophisticated late night destination though, just a staring point early evening then leave it to the young'ns.

There is nothing quite like a promenade along the seafront. An aquatic experience suitable for both young and old. this is a drive destination, not sure if there are any public transport links, but at a push one could take a train journey from Edinburgh traversing the historic Forth rail bridge which in itself is an experience and hop off at 'North Queensferry' station. I am sure a taxi fare from here would not be outrageous. Im told that the Ferrybridge Hotel offers some good food with light snacks/refreshments available daily.
