Food scene

Here’s an idea of what’s around the local area to this flat. Numbers in brackets is the miles away from this flat. The Benny’s chip shop on main road across from Appin Road – looks nice and old fashioned. But better chips and other nice takeaway food can be bought a little to the right at Café Zecchino. There are other takeaways along there too. If you want grocery staples then Nisa-Way is good enough. If you want a wider range then there’s Co-op supermarket on Alexandra Parade. Alexandra Parade – has various restaurants and cafes. Favourites are Celinos and Amore. DUKE STREET This used to be the longest street in Britain. There are lots of essential services here, plus cafes and restaurants and bars. There’s also loads of bars and restaurants. Here are just a few. East Coffee Shop is groovy. (0.7) Coias – very busy Italian restaurant that’s been around for generations. (0.7) Dennistoun BBQ (0.5) Tapa Bakehouse and coffee shop is organic, vegetarian, and has award-winning bread. (0.7) Tibo Bistro is pleasant. (0.7) Redmonds bar is groovy and does nice food. (0.8) Nakodar – award winning restaurant. It’s actually on Annfield Place, just a few steps from Duke Street. (0.8) Bilson Eleven is expensive but rated highly. It’s actually on Annfield Place, just a few steps from Duke Street. (0.8) Tennent’s Brewery Tour – this beer has been made since 1556. Their street art is worth passing by for. (1.1) Drygate Brewery – microbewery set in a big venue. They also host theatre, clubs, arty gigs, comedy, markets etc. (1.3)

Neighbourhoods

Some favourite vintage spots, plus a few worthy mentions. Necropolis – if you love old Victorian graveyards. (1.6) Cathedral – Dates from the 1100s. The new film Outlaw King had a few scenes in here re-enacting real scenes from Robert the Bruce’s time there in the 1300s. (1.5) Religious Museum here but I don’t rate it much. But the building is beautiful, newly built but made to look very old. (1.5) Glasgow Royal Infirmary – dates back to 1794 and they do tours. Many medical innovations made here. Also good to note there is an Accident and Emergency here if you need it. Dial 999. (1.5) Provand’s Lordship - Oldest house in Glasgow from 1471. (1.5) The Barras Market –For vintage finds and Glasgow characters. An institution since the 1920s. Open weekends from around 11-3. (1.5) The Barrowlands Ballroom – gig venue. (1.5) St Lukes – bar, restaurant and gig venue inside an old church. (1.5) Celtic Parkhead football stadium. (1.3) Emirates Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – many international sporting events. Vintage Glasgow

VINTAGE Assuming you like history and vintage stuff (cos you chose this home). A walk along Duke Street into town you will pass the Necropolis - if you like graveyards. Turn right up High Street takes you to Provands Lordship, built 1471, the oldest house in Glasgow, then on to the Glasgow Cathedral from 12th Century, and Royal Infirmary, 1794. Or you could turn left and you're in Merchant City - home of the tobacco merchants of the 1700s who built their empires from the slave industry. Museum of Modern Art if you're into that. Merchant City good vibe at night. Anything by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a designer and architect from the 1900s who was way ahead of his time. Willow Tea rooms on Sauchiehall Street has been painstakingly reproduced and just opened recently. Scotland Street School - inside has replicas of historical school rooms. House for an Art Lover. Macintosh House is next to the Hunterian Museum in west end. The Tenement House is fab - a genuine old tenement that hadn't been updated since the 1920s or so. Glasgow University, built 1451, is the 4th oldest uni in the English-speaking world. Riverside Musuem - lots of travel stuff plus a replica of an old Glasgow street. Kelvingrove Art Gallery – as well as museum objects, look at the Scottish wildlife, Scottish art. It has organist playing at 1 pm. Summerlee Industrial Museum in Coatbridge includes cute replicas of miners cottages through the ages. The Barras. Vintage and Retro, South Street Various car boot sales – Blochairn, Polmadie, Lanark.
