The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is not just about portraits of famous Scots. It gives you an insight into the lives and careers of people who are Scottish, of those who consider themselves to be Scottish and of the country itself. A fine taster of Scotland away from stereotypes and tack. It is my favourite Art gallery in this city. The Grand Hall never ceases to amaze me and at the end of a visit the cafe of the Portrait Gallery offers the most amazing food. A great bonus is that admission is free, so you can come and go as often as you wish.

Harrison Park has a small fenced play park which is great for toddlers and younger children. Outside the fenced area there is plenty of space to run around, kick a ball or play frizbee. Some areas are restricted for dogs.

We used to call this the 'wooden play park' when our children were small. It is aimed at younger children. It is fenced so that the little ones can't escape. It is located at the bottom of Bruntsfield Links, Edinburgh's only free putting green.

This play park is great for all ages. It is large and offers entertainment even for teenagers. Children would probably consider this to be the best play park in Edinburgh. There is a cafe on site and there are toilets round the corner.

Food Scene

The interior of the Caley Sample Room is nice and welcoming. They have an amazing selection of wines and craft beers and are a good gastro-pub. Children are allowed in but have to leave by 8pm. This is due to Edinburgh's strict alcohol licensing rules.

Shopping

If you are a fan of vintage clothing and accessories this is THE PLACE to go. Once you get past the somewhat strange window display and have got used to the smell you'll find a tardis of the weird and wonderful. This place is the most exciting vintage shop I have ever come across. Here you may be able to pick up the ultimate genuine Scottish souvenir or just take the funniest selfie ever. A place not to be missed!

Lidl has a vast selection of food and drink at budget prices. Recently they added a bakery section and bake their bread on the premises. You can buy everything you need in here without breaking the bank as long as you don't mind that most things are brands you may not have heard of.

The Cameo is one of Edinburgh's two independent cinemas. Cinema one is great and has atmosphere, the other two screen are somewhat small. The Cameo cafe/ bar is a cosy spot for a pre-show drink. It is on the no 10 and no 27 bus routes, a mere 10min ride from 'Shaftesbury Park'.
