Food scene

The friendliest hidden cafe, where the locals go and recommend. Tom the Barista owner makes the best coffee and his sister Genevieve makes the best home cooked food in the tiny kitchen out back. Casual atmosphere, outdoor seating in the lane and indoor seating on sofas and tables.

Amazing location, amazing food, amazing service...Go there... but book in advance as they have been discovered and the locals are recommending this great food spot. Stylish simple white Scandi inspired interior with an outdoor room overlooking the Paihia Bay. There are steps next to the Westpac Bank but I think there is another way in too, ask how to get there when you book.

Nature walks

Paihia is a hilly area with lots of beautiful bush (forest)walks. Here are a selection of my favourites.
Make sure you have plenty of time to visit the Treaty Grounds as there is so much to enjoy here. It is $25 entry for NZ'ers and $50 Entry for non-residents but it is so worth it and value for money once you go in. Included is a guided tour, a cultural performance, two short movie rooms, interactive Museum, the new Memorial Museum, an upstairs exhibition space, a bush walk, four traditonal waka canoes and a master carver and an awesome gift and art shop and cafe.

Neighbourhoods

So much to see and do in Paihia. Favourites eateries & shopping go-tos; *Best Cafe; Tasty homemade food and a bike-loving barista - Third Wheel Coffee. Take the alley next to the Fire Station on Selwyn Road, head towards the water and you'll find the locals cafe in the alley. Closed Monday. Open 8-2pm only *Kombi Nation - a clothing and collectables mecca. Next door to Third Wheel Cafe. *Flying Fish Design store - on the main shopping street, Look for the blue painted exterior & the Flying Fish mural on the wall. Cool jewellery, prints and gifts. *Rip Curl for all your streetwear and beach needs. *Terra Restuarant - Scandi dining - upscale simple & stylish. Above Westpac, Outdoor seating on the balcony with water views. *Charlotte's Kitchen - on the end of the Wharf, Pizza, Seafood, Water Views. *JFC - Just Fish n Chips - except it's not - they serve delicious taco's, Great Seafood chowder & a variety of seafood dishes. They have wonderful outdoor seating in the garden and often have live music. The white villa across the road from the beach, near the stone Church. Turn right at the start of School Rd and you'll find it. *CKB -Craft Kitchen & Bar, great pub food and friendly service. It's on the water next to the tourist helicopter at the end of the Maritime Building. *Greens Restaurants - Outstanding Indian & Thai food restaurants located on the waterfront, on each side of the alley with the whale in it. Walk past Third Wheel cafe & Kombi Nation then you'll find Greens. *Climb the steps to the lookout beside and to the right of the Helicopter by the public toilets. *Zane Greys, resort style bar and dining on the over the water space. Relax on the oversized deck loungers. *Alfresco cafe & Rayz on the Bay are both opposite the beach to the right of School Road, They both have local live music from 3pm-7ish on the weekends, food is mostly pub grub. Hang with the locals. *For awesome views head to the Golf Club Cafe, outdoor seating under umbrella's, you are surrounded by green grass & blue sky & water. Head up the hill past the Waitangi Museum. *The Waitangi Museum is a must-do, the Entrance fee includes the grounds tour, a cultural performance, carving studio, waka shed, gift shop and three buildings of cultural museums. This are the main museum, the new Maori Battalion museum and the Busby Family home where the Treaty of Waitiangi was signed. There is also a great cafe set in a garden with a pond with eels. You can enter the cafe from the carpark without having to pay to go into the museum. *Supermarkets: Four Square & a mini Countdown in the village - opposite the large carpark in town, a 5 minute walk. You'll find a larger Countdown, go left at the roundabout towards Waitangi, left along the beach. It is a safe neighbourhood but please use common sense with regards to your security and safety. Please lock the ranch slider that opens to the deck when you go out.
There are several local swimming beaches in walking distance to Paihia Loft. The closest is to the right of the start of School Rd, Paihia Beach. At the end of this beach you can walk around the rocks to Sullivans Beach ( this has no vehicle access) then you can walk further to Te Haumi beach around the coastline via the sand & rocks. At Te Haumi there is The Coffee Guy van until 11am most days, & the Vege Truck shop. During summer, there is also the local strawberry vendor. Take a bag and stock up your local supplies of fresh grown. If you want to explore Te Tī Bay beach, walk to the waterfront & head left along the bay, there is a small rocky beach before the point with the big blue whale mural. Venture further around the corner to find the sweeping golden beach which is lined with shade trees & grass. You can walk along the beach to the bridge, cross the bridge to visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. If you go further past the Treaty grounds there is the golf course with public access to the cliff top vistas.

On weekends they have a shuttle to the top so all you need to deal with is the downhill adrenaline. The arty creative hub set in containers include a cafe( open weekends & school hols only), Cool Merch shop, Bike repair workshop and the hire shop. There are tables to enjoy the awesome views and they hire Ebikes too.

Take a ride to the top of the hill past Waitangi Museum and venture on to the Gold Club for Burgers and a coffee or beer. It's open to anyone and the views are a must. It's got a large old school clubhouse and the best vista around.
