Welcome to Hartford CT! Hartford has plenty of history and culture to share with everyone who visits! Hartford (the state's capitol) is home to beautiful parks, unique museums, performing arts and restaurants. Museums and Parks: The Wadsworth Atheneum is located at 600 Main Street. It was founded in 1842 and when it opened its doors in 1844 people found it held Art in many forms- Deco, Landscapes, Impressionism, Contemporary and Modern. One of the largest in CT! Elizabeth Park located at 1561 Asylum Ave a beautiful park filled with 15,000 Rose bushes with 800 varieties. It is 102 acres and in addition to the rose garden, the park contains greenhouses, lawns, pathways, a pond, and tennis courts. The State Capitol located on 210 Capitol Ave has collections of historic facts and home to our State Senate, Governor, and House of Representatives. Made from granite, marble, and a stunning gold dome it has been designated a national historic landmark. The Connecticut Science Center located at 250 Columbus Blvd- 860-724-3623. Is a combination of art, music, and science. Included at the museum are audio, tactile, and visual exhibits, among others. The Exploring Space gallery allows visitors to see a moon rock and moon craters, or go on a Venture to a Black Hole, while the River of Life teaches guests about the importance of the Connecticut River. The Picture of Health helps to show the differences between good and bad health habits. So much to see and a wonderful place to take children. The Mark Twain House & Museum located at 351 Farmington Ave- 860-247-0998 is where Mark Twain also known as Samuel Longhorne Clemens lived in this house in Hartford where he wrote his most famous books, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, among others. Built in the Victorian Gothic style between 1873 and 1874, the house has 19 rooms. The museum features permanent and rotating exhibits where visitors learn more about the author and his life. Bushnell Park- encircled by Elm, Trinity (runs through as well), Capitol, Ford and Jewell, has 50 acres and features paths, trees, a pond, a pavilion where performances are hosted as well as other festivities, a carousel, and the Corning Fountain. The park also has memorials like the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, which is dedicated to those who fought during the American Civil War, as well as the Horace Wells Monument. Mortensen Riverfront Plaza- Located at 50 Columbus Blvd at the center of the Riverfront Plaza a popular downtown attraction. Here you can relax and watch the boats on the river, exercise on the stairs, take a hike on one of the trails along the river, get on a boat tour of the city or walk across Founders bridge to East Hartford. Museum of Connecticut History at 231 Capitol Ave in Hartford 860-757-6535, is home to the State Library and the Supreme Court. The focus is on the state’s governmental, industrial, and military history, which it showcases through a range of permanent and temporary exhibits. The museum also houses the state’s Royal charter from the 1600’s, Flags, portraits, weapons, uniforms, the Colt’s firearm collection and much more. Admission is free. Connecticut Historical Society- 1 Elizabeth St. 860-236-5621 Here you can enjoy 400 years of Connecticut history and over 4 million diverse items in the areas of textiles, furniture, clothing, manuscripts, diaries, prints, photos, tavern signs, children’s books, and various tools. TheaterWorks- Bushnell Towers & Plaza, 233 Pearl Street, Hartford, Connecticut, 860-527-7838 is a professional theater group and they hold over 200 performances each season. The building, now called City Arts on Pearl, is also home to galleries, office spaces, rehearsal rooms, and storage spaces. The intimate theater seats 195 people and is in the basement of the building. Hartford Stage- 50 Church St. 860-527-5151 is a well-known resident theater located on Church Street in Hartford. The theater presents revivals of classic plays and musicals as well as both American and international premiers of new and innovative works for stage. They host after school programs, theater classes for adults as well as for children, theater residencies, student matinee performances, and much more. The theater also hosts a variety of events such as AfterWords Discussion and Sunday Afternoon Discussion where visitors can join cast members after a performance. There are also special performances for visitors who are vision impaired or hearing impaired. Old State House- 800 Main Street, Hartford, CT, Phone: 860-522-6766 This National Historic Landmark has a range of exhibits such as the Joseph Steward Museum of Curiosities as well as a great number of historic rooms that showcase the history of Connecticut. They also house the Farmers market on the plaza outside the building. Restaurants: Hartford has a ton of great restaurants! Throw a rock and you will hit a wonderful place to dine. Here are a couple of favorites: Bears Smokehouse- 25 Front St. Hartford, CT 06103, Phone: 860-724-3100 wonderfully delicious smoked meats with an array of sides! Great for lunch or dinner. They have a bear mural and a picnic area to sit and eat outdoors equipped with a sink so you can wash off before you leave. Eat in or take out offered. Black-Eyed Sally’s Southern Kitchen- 350 Asylum St. Hartford, CT 06103, Phone: 860-278-7427 Southern American cuisine, BBQ and Creole. They offer live music, catering, and delicious complimentary corn bread. Eat in or take out is offered.
