Sightseeing
A historic pa sight that is of cultural importance to Maori. It has a fantastic view of the coastline towards Mount Maunganui and a view over the Whakatane township. This area is considered Wahi Tapu - a sacred area that is to be respected.
There are also walking tracks here down to Otarawairere Bay. The lovely folk at the Whakatane Information Centre will be able to provide you with more information.
Perfect for a couple of hours or a day trip! The track starts at West End Surf Beach and takes 20 minutes or so to reach. Take a book, bottle of water and picnic lunch and sit under the mighty Pohutukawa trees that line the bay.
Swim, search the rock pools or simply relax. Only reached by walking tracks or watercraft. A local favourite, including exercise track.
