Gloucester Road is blessed with all kinds of amazing cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Amazing cakes and brunches, great interior and lovely staff-and there's a nice ten minute stroll to it via Wentworth Road, Monk Road and alongside the allotments onto Longmead Avenue - easily our favourite cafe on the Gloucester Road!

Great local bakers who are always experimenting, innovating and adding new products. They have two outlets nearby. The one marginally closer to us is towards the Zetland Road end of Gloucester Road. Our kids love the chocolate flake cakes and we never say no to their cinnamon whirls!

Great local café that bakes their own sourdough bread daily on the premises. Nice range of brunches. Gets busy at the weekend so might worth turning up early.

Families

Gloucester Road is loved by the scores of families who have settled on its north and south sides.
Really cool park-nice Lido for kids in summer, sledging -if we're lucky- in winter, playground and plenty of space for football! You can get there passing down the side of the Grace pub but the quickest way is probably to saunter through co-op and out through their back door. Probably our closest park -about eight minutes walk away.

Great city farm that is free to visit. (Voluntary donation suggested.) There is also a delightful cafe over the road focussed on sustainable local produce. Top tip: it’s a nice 20 minute walk via the back of co-op, through the park and down the public footpath.

Swings, roundabout, a great sandpit and zip wire! There are also one or two picnic tables and it’s about a 10 minute walk away uphill. (Always good to be coming downhill on the way back!)

Great little park adjacent to the beautiful Lovers’ Walk avenue of trees . It’s about 15 minutes away via Tyne Path. It might also be useful to know that it is just a hop, skip and a jump from Redland railway station and in the Ballentine’s health club below the park there are what are probably our closest rapid electric car charging points.

Shopping

The Gloucester Road is full of a great and varied range of independent shops
Fantastic toy shop with very friendly proprietors. They have a great range of toys and are also swift to react to ‘toy trends’. They also have a great range of picture books and birthday cards.

Great selection of wine and the friendly staff are happy to guide your choice. Look out for delicious rosé produced nearby at Dunleavy Vineyards in the Mendips. They also have a great range of local ales including the delicious kaleidoscope IPA produced nearby in St Werburghs by the Wiper and True brewery. There’s also a good range of coffee. Check their opening times as they open a bit later and shut a bit later.

Entertainment

There are lots of things to see and do in this part of Bristol. Hope you enjoy some of our favourites.
Small screen, cosy cinema that is adjacent to the local Waitrose and within walking distance of the house. There are some great food options such as Prego and little French around the corner in North view if you want a meal nearby. The cinema offers a discounted family ticket (you do not have to be related) and special kids’ crew discounted £2 tickets on Saturday mornings at 10 am. We love the fact that you can take a mug of tea or coffee into the auditorium!

The zoo is also a short drive, bus (or potentially-train!) ride away. If you were feeling energetic it is also a nice 5 mile round walk via the downs. There is an electric car charging point in both carparks. You could easily spend a whole day here-there is lots to see and do, including different play areas suitable for different ages including a really nice water play area for toddlers that is worth taking along swimming costumes and towels for. Older kids and adults with a sense of adventure might also enjoy the tree top trail. The zoo is at its best in good weather but there is a surprising amount to see and do undercover as well.

A lazy weekend stroll around the harbourside is a classically Bristolian thing to do. Highlights along the way including M shed, a massive disused warehouse that’s now a great museum that tells the story of the city. Children and big kids alike will enjoy the double-decker green bus parked inside. If you would rather travel by water no problem, ferry boats chug continuously around and across the harbour and right up to the landing stage at Bristol Temple Mead’s railway station. The harbourside is also the home of the legendary SS Great Britain ship. There are plenty of refuelling stops along the way, including several floating restaurants, cafés on floating pontoons and pubs such as the ostrich and pumphouse for lazy afternoon beers.
