Pipe Spring National Monument, a 45 minute drive from Hurricane, is a natural wonder with year round water running out of the mountain. Originally settled in 1870 as a Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Windsor Castle was used as a tithing office In 1870, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) began construction of a fortified ranch house at Pipe Spring. The ranch house/fort was designed as both headquarters for a tithing cattle ranch and as protection from attacks. The Mormon settlers did not particularly fear the Paiutes, which at that time inhabited much of the Arizona Strip, but the Navajo, who would cross the Colorado River at low water and raid both the Paiutes and the Mormon settlers. The fortified ranch house was constructed directly over Pipe Spring. The Mormons were only the latest group to be drawn to Pipe Spring, which had attracted people for centuries. The Ancestral Puebloans (formerly Anasazi) inhabited the area from approximately 1 A.D. to 1200 A.D. The Paiute tribe followed the Ancestral Puebloans, and had lived in the Pipe Spring region for nearly three centuries by the time European settlers began moving into this area. https://www.nps.gov/pisp/index.htm

From 1870 to 1877, President Brigham Young lived in St. George, Utah, during the winter months. Beginning in 1872, he and members of his family lived in the place that is now called the Brigham Young Winter Home. From this home, he directed the affairs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Today this historic site is open to the public year-round. The home and adjacent office have been restored and furnished to reflect their 1870's appearance. Tours tell about Brigham Young’s family life in St. George and about his role in directing the settlement of southern Utah, including the construction of the St. George Utah Temple. Brigham Young purchased this home in 1872. He remodeled it, doubling its size to more fully meet his needs. https://history.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/historic-sites/utah/what-to-expect-when-you-visit-the-church-historic-sites-in-southern-utah?lang=eng
