American Players Theater, also in Spring Green, stages nightly Shakespearean (and, sometimes, other!) plays in the open air. People drive from miles around to watch this “world class classical theater”. Plays regularly sell out, so call ahead! Phone: 608.588.2361

Canoeing the Wisconsin River with Wisconsin River Outings, which are headquartered in Boscobel, ten minutes away by car. You can rent canoes and equipment and arrange to get dropped off and picked up (downstream, so you don’t need to paddle against the current!). The Wisconsin River is slow and wide and shallow - too shallow for large motorcraft, so you’ll have the river to yourself. A TREAT! Phone: 608.375.53000

Driftless Brewing is opening a highly anticipated taproom in Soldiers Grove in Spring 2019. Run by Chris and Mike, two of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, they brew beer from local ingredients like honey (Local Buzz is my fave). The tap room will be a must-see. We have a growler you’re welcomed to use while you stay at the cabin! Phone: 608.624.5577

St Francis Hermitage is the church/restaurant/compound built by hand by a French Franciscan community - includes an organic orchard and bakery - and a French restaurant. The whole experience is a tiny bit kooky and not exactly cheap (we often spend close to $100, with drinks and dessert, for 2 of us). But there’s a lot to love. If you go, try to get a look at the chapel, which is amazing. They will make vegetarian meals, too, but you may want to call ahead. They’re open Saturday and Sunday only, for lunch and dinner - you can also attend services. Phone: 608.735.4015

Mineral Point is a super cute town about 45 minutes drive away - worth the trip for antique shopping along High Street (and my favorite the Pear and Salvage at 12 Fountain St 608.987.2902). Also Brewery Creek Brewpub (608.987.3298 23 Commerce St) and a wood-fired pizza place at Popoli Pizzeria (608.987.0480 20 Commerce St, Mineral Point, WI 53565)
