The Zoo is well known as a centre for rescued big cats, all have come to their forever homes at the Zoo at different stages of their lives and from a variety of backgrounds.

You can also think of an animal’s backbone or Chine of a boat, a deep, narrow scooped out cup, as in the Saxon for Shanklin – Scenc-hlinc, cup in the rising ground.
The Chine spring rises in the Downs and can be spectacular in heavy rain, especially at night with the lights. There are many mineral springs (chalybeate) all over the Chine and Shanklin, discovered by Dr Fraser, Charles II’s physician. Shanklin briefly became a Spa in Victorian times and the treatment rooms are still there on the site of the Royal Spa Hotel. Over the centuries, the Chine was used mainly for smuggling, so prevalent in the 18th Century, that the Customs and Excise officers had to be stationed in the Old Village. It had already started to attract increasing interest for its beauty and became a favourite with artists, writers, poets which our Exhibition highlights.

Park in the free Car park go through the gate and walk up hill with fantastic sea views on your left. If you get to a wooden signpost on your left at the bottom of the hill turn right and go into the wood or turn left and go somewhere I never have!

The closest place to walk your Dog and one of the best on the Island.
Leave the Old Kitchens walk to the road turn Right, walk to the High down Inn, go Left past the High down inn, Up hill to the Car park, Just before the Car park turn Right on the path, walk along path through Two gates you are now on Tennyson down. This section is fenced on the left where the cliff is. Stick to the left of three paths all heading forward and walk towards the Rocket testing site

Headen Warren is adjacent to Tennyson down and is a safe Dog walk, with views of the needles. Alum bay.
Park or walks to the junction or York lane Cliff road in Totland (park on the side of the road). Walk up the gravel path on the other side of the road to York lane around the house at the end of the lane and on to Headen warren.
