Built 1067 onwards Norwich Castle is a medieval royal fortification in the city of Norwich, in the English county of Norfolk. It was founded in the aftermath of the Norman conquest of England when William the Conqueror (1066–1087) ordered its construction because he wished to have a fortified place in the town of Norwich. It proved to be his only castle in East Anglia. In 1894 the Norwich Museum moved to Norwich Castle and it has been a museum ever since. The museum & art gallery holds significant objects from the region, especially works of art, archaeological finds and natural history specimens. https://www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/norwich-castle

With a stunning location on the north Norfolk coast and at the heart of a thriving 25,000 acre estate, Holkham Hall is described as an exceptional place, rich in history, architecture and wildlife. The seat of the Earls of Leicester, this elegant 18th century mansion is still very much a lived-in family home which the family take pride in sharing with visitors. The hall is an elegant 18th century Palladian style house, based on designs by William Kent and built by Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester. The Marble Hall is a spectacular introduction to this imposing building, with its 50ft pressed plaster dome ceiling and walls of English alabaster, not marble as its name implies. Stairs lead to magnificent state rooms displaying superb collections of ancient statuary, original furniture, tapestries and paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Claude, Gaspar Poussin and Gainsborough.

Experience a nostalgic trip by steam on Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge railway which runs between the historic market town of Aylsham and bustling town of Wroxham, at the heart of the Norfolk Broads. The 18 mile round trip runs through the pretty Bure Valley countryside following the meandering River Bure through meadowland and ancient pasture. Along the line are wayside halts serving the picturesque Broadland villages of Brampton, Buxton and Coltishall where you can hop off and explore by foot. Hop back on and continue your journey by train by waiving down the driver to stop. The single journey between Aylsham and Wroxham takes 45 minutes https://www.bvrw.co.uk/

Visit the extensive ruins of Baconsthorpe Castle, a moated and fortified 15th century manor house, that are a testament to the rise and fall of a prominent Norfolk family, the Heydons. Over 200 years, successive generations of this ambitious family built, then enlarged, and finally abandoned this castle. Sir John Heydon probably built the strong inner gatehouse during the turbulent Wars of the Roses period, and his son Sir Henry, whose memorial can be seen in Baconsthorpe Church, completed the fortified house. In more peaceful times, their descendants converted part of the property into a textile factory, and then added the turreted Elizabethan outer gateway, inhabited until 1920.

ST. PETER'S CHURCH HAVERINGLAND is the oldest surviving building in the parish. Dating to the 11th century and containing much re-used Roman building material, St. Peter’s stands isolated on a disused World War Two airfield that was once the park to Haveringland Hall. It has possibly one of the oldest round towers in the county. The rest of the church, including the top of the tower, was rebuilt in 1858, consisting of an aisled nave, chancel and big north and south transepts. The interior also mostly dates from the 19th century, however the font dates back to the 15th century.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary Aylsham
Our story begins as it does for many charities, with a small but committed group of people desperate to make a difference. For Redwings, the story began with the rescue of a single pony called Sheba. She was rescued from a dealer and her recovery inspired the formation of a sanctuary in 1984 dedicated to saving horses from a life of fear and neglect. From that one life saved in the beginning, we are now a registered charity and care for more than 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules every day at our farms across the country. We also have 500 horses living in Guardian homes through our rehoming programme.p https://www.redwings.org.uk/home

One of the country’s most accessible reserves, Sculthorpe is internationally recognised for its wildlife. The reserve is located in the beautiful Wensum Valley in Norfolk, and is a marvellous, peaceful place with a huge variety of wildlife in a rich and unusual mosaic of woodland, fen and reedbed habitats. Boardwalks make access easy for everyone, and lead you through the reserve, visiting all the best areas. Bird feeders and nest boxes are sited along the way, adding further interest and there are viewing platforms, places to sit and relax along the way. A series of hides for watching wildlife are located throughout the reserve and include the elevated, tree-top Volunteer Hide and Aerial Walkway. All hides are fully accessible by wheelchair. Sculthorpe Moor can proudly boast that we are one of the most disabled-friendly and accessible nature reserves in the whole country. The reserve is rich, full of wildlife and varied but, at only 18-hectares (45 acres), is easy to explore and it offers everyone a real opportunity to get involved with the natural environment. Small but perfectly formed, a real gem of a reserve, and it’s a great place to come for a stroll. The reserve is currently open (April - October) between 8.00am and 5.00pm and (November - March) between 8.00am - 4.00pm, 7 days a week. Late-night opening, Thursday 8.00am – 8.30pm, or dusk, whichever is earlier. Please note last visitors are admitted up to 1 hour prior to closing. DOGS NOT ALLOWED

Holkham National Nature Reserve covers about 3706 hectares (9158 acres) from Wells-next-the-Sea to Burnham Overy and comprises a number of rare and precious habitats including salt marsh, sand dunes, pine woodland, beach and grazing marsh. The present landscape is largely man-made having been reclaimed from saltmarsh between the seventeenth and nineteenth century. The 2nd Earl of Leicester planted the distinctive belt of pine trees in the nineteenth century to help stabilise the dunes. At one time the tidal creeks were wide enough to allow ships to load cargo from a ‘staithe’ or quay in Holkham Village. The work to hold back the sea and secure the fresh-water marshes continues to the present day.
