Pei et Mei has managed to strike the perfect balance between modern and traditional both in terms of food and atmosphere. I immediately felt at ease upon entering: exposed brick walls, Scandic decor details and a handful of tables overlooking the open kitchen make the space cozy yet slick. Foodwise, there are various set menus to choose from for dinner but If you find yourselves around noon in the area, go for the lunch tasting menu, which includes 3 different dishes and a glass of wine at a bargainous price.

BELGA is one of the most visited bars in Brussels and an architectural landmark in Place Flagey as it’s housed in a 1930s Art Deco building which used to serve as the headquarters of Belgium’s first national radio station. Situated just opposite the Ixelles Ponds (Étangs d’Ixelles), it has one of the biggest and probably sunniest terraces in Brussels which makes it a great spot for people watching. Unequivocal evidence that these fries are delicious is evident through a Facebook campaign from 2011 which saved Frit Flagey from shutting down. Instead, the owner of the friterie just moved it to another place, and the long queue moved to get a taste of those golden potato sticks, which seem to melt on your tongue. They are often titled (along with several others) as the best fries in the city.

On Wednesdays the main square (Place du Chatelain / Kasteleinsplein) turns into an open-air market, where locaL producers sell pretty much everything from fresh meat, fish and vegetables to cheese, bread, olives, candy and flowers. If you arrive around 14:00 when the market opens, you’ll be able to do your shopping at ease . The real attraction however takes place towards its closing when people make their way to the Chatelain market for after-work drinks (or an “apéro”, as the locals call it). The whole area comes alive as buzzing crowds gather on the square sipping wine or beer, tasting fresh oysters or nibbles from the various food stands and catching up with old and new friends.

Tucked away in an old industrial building close to Place Sainte Catherine in downtown Brussels, Via Via Travellers Cafe is a space with edge and personality. The coolest space is probably its indoor courtyard which connects the main space of the cafe with its sunny terrace outdoors – bright thanks to the glass rooftop, furnished with vintage colorful chairs and details revealing the history of the building that used to form part of the docks in Brussels back in the day. On the menu cocktails, fair trade coffee and Belgian beers, such as Zinnebir and Gageleer together with a few savoury treats, like soups, sandwiches and quiches.

Pin Pon is housed in an old fire station, so it’s no surprise that the decor has followed an industrial theme, reminiscent of the building’s history. The space is set up in different levels with the bar area on the ground floor, a wine bar on the mezzanine and the restaurant on the upper floor. The most striking feature of Pin Pon is the glass roof, which lets in abundant natural light. It’s really lovely to enjoy your meal or coffee while watching the flea market on the Place du Jeu de Balle and soaking up the sun! When it gets too warm though, the best option is to grab a table at their spacious terrace and enjoy a glass of Belgian beer.

Because it's one of the city's techno temples and the biggest names in the field (without exception) have DJ's there, le Fuse is a must for any decent, self-respecting clubber. The unique atmosphere that prevails there attracts those in the know, who come from far and wide. The end-of-the-night crescendos, as things approach hysteria, have become the stuff of near legend. There are also gay evenings on Sundays, as fiendishly good as they are famous on our continent. Supervised free car park and democratic admission fee before midnight.

Parks & Nature
Tenbosch Park happens to be one of the most beautiful ones. No wonder it has made it into my “Best Parks in Brussels” list! Despite its relatively small size, Parc Tenbosch / Tenboschpark has a long history and many hidden surprises for visitors. Tenbosch Park remains lovely throughout the seasons but the best time to fully enjoy it is during spring and summer when it’s in full bloom and there are chaises longues available for free.

Nice place for an apero or a picnic ! This abbey was founded in 1201 by a noble woman of Brussels named Gisèle, and was entrusted to the nuns of the Cistercian order. The buildings which were badly damaged during the Wars of Religion were rebuilt in the 16th century, and enlarged in the 18th century. Only certain parts of the church still date from the 14th century and belong to that transitional period between Gothic splendour and the flamboyant!
