“For anyone holidaying in the southeast of Sicily, one place that really shouldn’t be missed, is the Vendicari Nature Reserve. There are many reasons for this assertion, none more convincing than the fact that its beautiful selection of beaches are amongst the least frequented in Sicily……at least by humans. Situated on the southern-most part of Sicily’s east coast, Vendicari is a mixture of lagoons (pantano), sand dunes, rocky coastlines, and sandy beaches. It was instituted in 1984 and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The high salinity of the ground provides an ideal habitat for Mediterranean maquis, herbs such as thyme and rosemary and other prickly customers such as juniper bushes.”

“From Belluccelli it is a 10 minute drive to the Vendicari nature reserve that boasts some of the finest sandy beaches in Sicily. These beaches are pleasingly under populated even in the midst of summer. Vendicari is also home to thousands of migrating flamingos, and sea turtles nest on its beaches. ”

“Remember to bring a packed lunch and water. The way down to the lakes is not suitable for pushchairs or pregnant women is under the sun and with steep stairs . Bring ID card , you will need to release it at the entrance before going down to the lakes . Bring along your sunscreen and, at the end of the day, bring with you back your rubbish .”

General Travel
“Marzamemi has an exotic flair to it. It started as a fishing village and continues the tradition today. But Marzememi, unlike many other towns in Sicily, doesn't have Greek roots; rather it was founded by the Arabs and originally called Marsa' al Hamen (which translates as "harbour of the turtle doves").”
