PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION AND "HOUSE RULES" THOROUGHLY BEFORE REQUESTING A RESERVATION. My place is close to Kahurangi National Park, Mokihinui River and Rivermouth, the Tasman Sea, Gentle Annie Point, Charming Creek and Chasm Creek Walkways, The Old Ghost Road Cycleway, and Cowshed Cafe. You’ll love my place because of the views, the location, the people, and the ambiance. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids).
Our one-thousand acre property is set in surroundings where Aotearoa is as it used to be—lush, unspoiled and natural. A slice of paradise. Gentle Annie is an ideal place to get off the beaten track to experience New Zealand's untamed wilderness and truly appreciate the South Island’s West Coast. Bounded by the Tasman Sea, the mighty Mokihinui River and beautiful ancient bush, our seaside accommodation is a peaceful place to relax and enjoy time away from the busy life and provides a great base to explore our stunning region. Centrally located in the Northern West Coast, Gentle Annie is near places of interest where day trips will get you north to the magnificent Oparara Limestone Arches, the Kahurangi National Park, the Heaphy Track and south to the Chasm Creek and Charming Creek Walkways, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, the Denniston Plateau and the Cape Foulwind Seal Colony. We are on the doorstep of the new Old Ghost Road mountain-biking track! In any season, enjoy time at Gentle Annie. It will nourish your soul and awaken your senses.

Our slightly shabby 1910 villa is the perfect place to escape and read a few great novels. It has high ceilings, plenty of light, a colourful mix of decor, and lots of great books (Classic, modern, and NZ literature). The guestroom features bay windows and ornamental fireplace. Must love pets - we have one friendly beagle (Eager) and three aloof cats (Augustus, Remus & Romulus). Sample a wide range of local jams, honey, bread, milk, muesli, fruit and milk for breakfast.
This family home has been well-loved and is need of some repair and TLC, but that kind of adds to the character. The old cast iron bath has some rust marks and it takes a little while to get the temperature in the shower just right. My son and I will be your hosts and you can make yourself completely at home, with full use of all facilities and access to our vege garden. Tea, coffee, and sugar are provided in the guest room.
Just 25 minutes' walk along the Kawatiri RIver Trail to the beach, or five minutes' walk to shopping and cafes on Palmerston Street (Westport's main street). There is a corner shop and fish and chip shop at the end of our street. The neighbours are very friendly. A short drive to many of Buller's best attractions: The seal colony at Cape Fowlwind (20 minutes), caving at Charleston (30 minutes), Denniston mining village (20 minutes). Westport is nestled between three popular tramping tracks: THe Heaphy, The Old Ghost Road, and The Paparoa Track.

Definitivamente recomendo.

Situated in a rural mining settlement, 28kms from Westport on State Highway 67. A 1950's rustic family home with original decor and fixtures, a 1/2 acre section with houses each side. It has vege garden, fruit trees and hens. Goats are in the paddock backing on to native bush. It has a traditional coal/wood fire (dining room) and new log burner (living room) . Guest room has all day sun. Porch with sea view is accessed from outside. Sea is aprox 200metres from house across the highway.
Sea and bush view through bedroom windows. Fully fenced areas at the back of the house. The front porch is reached from outside. I have a big, friendly, obedient dog. Guests can use the usual kitchen appliances: stove, kettle, toaster, rice cooker, coffee maker, cutlery and crockery and fridge space Our tap water comes from a stream in the hill is used for washing/showering. Our rain water tank provides fresh clean water for drinking and cooking.
Granity is a typical, rural, westcoast settlement. It has a mild climate with few frosts in winter and some lovely hot days in summer. Most of the properties are about half an acre and its common for people to grow their own fruit and vegies and have a few chickens, or goats. The beach is 5min walk away across the railway track and over 1km long. We have the best Westcoast sunsets so bring your camera! Theres a cafe, craft shop, 2nd hand shop, library, plant nursery and museum in Granity. 4kms up the road in Ngakawau is convenience store, hotel and cafe, and Ngakawau swimming pool. also the start of Charming Creek Walkway. Hector Pottery is along this road. Stockton mine is up the hill to the north west about 15kms. It is a working, opencast mine. Granity was a typical mining town and coal is still used in many homes for warmth (open fire), water heating (wetback) and cooking (coal range oven) and on a winter night you can see the coal smoke over the houses. Charming Creek Walkway starts at Ngakawau and is an easy, short stroll along the Ngakawau River to historic mining scenery.

If you love the sound of the sea then this is the place to be. Very relaxed atmosphere. Free ranging chickens are amusing to watch as they wander around the garden. Our space is large and open plan. Beach front access, spacious outdoor area. Great walking and mountain bike tracks.
Buller Mines Rescue building has alot of character remaining from when it was a working building, even down to the locker room style shower and toilet. It was once what the name suggests, a mines rescue building where mine workers were trained to perform rescues. We still have a working mine up the hill from us in Stockton which can be toured with prior booking through outback tours in Westport
The Charming Creek walkway is very close and is highly recommended. There's plenty of biking and walking tracks and you can access the beach from the house. Millerton bath house is worth a look too and Deniston is not that far away, there's alot of history up there.

Karamea is the gateway to the Kahurangi National Park and is at the western end of the famous Heaphy and Wangapeka Tracks. This area is a natural wonderland of spectacular rain forests, limestone caves, pristine rivers and wild ocean views. Karamea is at the end of the road, at the Northern end of New Zealand's South Island's West Coast. It rests on the flats of the Karamea River and the coastal plain. It takes approximately one and half hours along the scenic road state highway 67, from Westport. The area is lush with native bush, Nikau palms, ferns, caves, rivers, alluvial flats, as well as beautiful long stretches of accessible sandy beaches, that border the Tasman Sea. The huge expanse of Kahurangi National Park lies to the north-east of Karamea. Abundant fishing opportunities can be had in the ocean. Fish for whitebait, flounder and snapper, as well as trout in the rivers. Karamea with its mild climate and beautiful surroundings has that relaxed "off the beaten track" feeling not often found nowadays. The surrounding area has a lots of natural features to please everybody, whether you are a tramper, caver, botanist, geologist, hunter, fisherman or just looking for a quiet, relaxing spot to spend a family holiday. Karamea was originally set up as a government-sponsored 'special settlement' in 1874. The picturesque farmland is nestled between lush forested mountain ranges on one side and the wild Tasman Sea on the other, stretching up the river valleys and along the coastline for 35 kms. Many different activities are available in Karamea and its surrounding area, such as rafting, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, scenic plane or helicopter flights, or swimming in the rivers and estuary. Tours can be booked to explore the Oparara Caves and limestone arches, at the Information Centre in Market Cross. The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand's top 10 Great Walks. Take a few hours to explore the southern end where Nikau forests border the wild West Coast beaches. You can drive up to the Kohahai river mouht, and have a BBQ or picnic there. There is a great walk there, called the Nikau Palms walk a 45 min explore in to the bush great for children and the more mature people! going over the Kohaihai river bridge is great to do and if you keep on walking for approximately 2 hours (this is a very slow estimate with children in tow), you will reach Scott's Beach great views and vast expanse of beach this is the either the start or the end of the Heaphy track. The estuaries are a combination of sand and mud, where you can walk for miles at low tide. Beware of the tide though as it rises and falls very quickly. Karamea is the gateway to the Kahurangi National Park and is at the western end of the famous Heaphy and Wangapeka Tracks. This area is a natural wonderland of spectacular rainforests, limestone caves, pristine rivers and wild ocean views. Many different activities are available in Karamea and its surrounding area, such as rafting, canoeing, kayaking or swimming in the rivers and estuary. Try out the local nine hole golf course by the sea. Mountain bike the 27 km return trip K-Road developed on the old logging roads. Indulge your interests in historical sites, bird watching or botany. Other local facilities include tennis, horse trekking, helicopter scenic flights, and tramping. The village of Market Cross hosts a Supermarket, numerous craft outlets and cafés, general store and hardware store, as well as the post office, a Tourist Information Centre, centennial museum and restaurants. Tours can be booked to explore the Oparara Caves and limestone arches, at the Tourist Information Centre in Market Cross. The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. Take a few hours to explore the southern end where Nikau forests border the wild West Coast beaches. The local tourist Information Centre has friendly staff that can assist you with transport, accommodation, food and services, as well as finding the right activities to suit your needs. They can also show you where the best fishing beaches or rivers are, where to go for short walks or five day tramps, how to go rafting or kayaking, hire a bike or organise a helicopter flight, have a game of golf or bowls, or simply stroll along the beach and catch one of Karamea famous sunsets. We have fascinating limestone caves and magnificent arches, ancient forests, roaring river gorges, quiet lagoons, and miles of beaches. Karamea is an 90 minute drive north of Westport on State Highway 67, a 4.5 hours drive from Nelson or a 6 hour drive from Christchurch. KARAMEA... Paradise found…. What to do WalksThere are many different walks to do depending upon your age ability and interests. In Karamea you can enjoy the solitude and the sunsets. MuseumThe local museum is full of very interesting local and family history, with a great collection of old photographs and maps. Opening times - five days a week over the summer, and open on demand over the winter months. Call at the Information Centre or note phone numbers to call on the Museum door. Estuaries There are several estuaries at the Karamea and Oparara River mouths. The bird life is strong, with pied stilts, black swans, and oyster catchers, blue and sometimes white herons. The estuaries are a combination of sand and mud, where you can walk for miles at low tide. Beware of the tide though as it rises and falls very quickly. I live in a large 1905 farm house, which I am slowly restoring, 1/2 km. from the beach in the beautifully natural piece of paradise that is Karamea. Living the simply abundant life by the sea, and I welcome you to share my space. Extra mattress available if necessary.
Karamea is s small town on the north west tip of the south island of NZ. It has many attractions including the Oparara Arches, Limestone Caves, Fenian Caves, the Heaphy track as well as miles and miles of beaches and stunning nature. In town there is a supermarket, gas station/information centre, hardware store/post office and coffee shop. There is a pub across the road serving a range of meals as well as 'The Last Resort' towards town catering for all your dining needs. In my house, which was built in 1905, there are all the modern conveniences you might expect, though I don't have a traditional fridge as I use a zeer 'pot in pot' cooling system. I have an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven, and a fully productive vegetable garden and greenhouse, which you are free to enjoy.
