“The development of Wynwood Walls turned out to be a powerful catalyst for Wynwood, a rapidly gentrifying district northwest of downtown Miami. In the early 2000s, Wynwood was little more than a shabby collection of underutilized storefronts, shady auto repair businesses, and struggling workshops. Since then, thousands of new full-time residents have moved in, tens of thousands of domestic and international visitors have passed through, and local business owners have ridden the rocket ship to prosperity. Walk through Wynwood Walls, centered on NW 2nd Avenue between NW 27th and NW 24th Streets, then look for an affordable place to grab a bite or refreshment.”

Zoo
“What is it? A lush, tropical oasis boasting waterfront views and hundreds of species of wildlife, plus playgrounds, zip lines and other attractions for kids. Why go? It may have started out as a place to see a few exotic fowl, but the former Parrot Jungle is now home so much more with 300-plus species of birds, orangutans and other animals. It’s also evolved into a sort of eco-theme park with attractions such as a flight simulator, an escape room and a seasonal light display (Luminosa is on view through January 8, 2020). Don’t miss: Splurge on an animal encounter for the chance to cradle lemurs, feed and pet sloths and get hands-on caretaking experience. ”

“When you first show up at Bodega, you could easily mistake it for a popular neighborhood taqueria. Between the Airstream trailer serving tacos and the picnic tables, it looks like a low-key spot. It is that, but as you see the Ubers full of models and clubgoers arriving and disappearing into the small taco joint, you get a sense there might be something more going on. Look around for a guy with an earpiece at the back of the room and tell him your friend sent you, and you might just get directed to a back door that looks like an entrance to a Porta Potti. Pass through here and you’ll enter a graffiti-filled men’s washroom. It’s only after passing through yet another door that you will enter one of South Beach’s hot hidden nightclubs. The mixologists have an extensive menu that relies heavily on “illegal” mezcal, and the DJ keeps the room pumping all through the night. It caters to a friendly, slightly older crowd and makes for a good introduction to the South Beach scene minus the cover charge and lineups that you’ll find at clubs closer to the beach.”

With nightly live music in the vein of jazz, soul, folk, blues or bluegrass, it's easy to feel like you're somewhere else. Somewhere a lot more bayou-esque than beachy.”
